Darts World Extras regular look at who is hot, and who’s not, in the tungsten tossing world:

Bullseyes:

Luke Littler – The Nuke has silenced almost all doubts over the past 12 months. His Grand Slam title win sees him become the youngest PDc ranking major winner by some way.

Dutch Darts – We have been highlighting the flowering of a new generation of Netherlands dartists for a while and they are coming through in droves.Open, Youth and Women’s categories are equally represented.

Gian Van Veen – GVV may not make the headlines in the same way certain other youngsters do, but our team have long backed him as the most likely to achieve things and build a long lasting career. His claiming of the World Youth title and another major last 8 spot, reconfirms that belief.

The Journeymen – Players such as Mickey Mansell, Martin Lukeman and Richie Edhouse have been in and around the top tier of our game for many years. But, the ingredients needed for their success have only recently come together. Keep ‘em peeled for similar late blooming success stories.

Bounceouts:

Dom Taylor – The Tower has been suspended following a positive drug test and may have blown his best opportunity at the highest level.

MVG – Mighty Mike has long been grappling with not being quite the force he was between 2013 and 2017. Despite some superb peaks since the truth is that the game does not have a single dominant force and the green Machine must accept this and move into a different career phase. Can he adjust?

Chris Dobey – Hollywood cannot seem to stitch together genuinely consistent form across the different parts of the modern game. His early exit after earning a number one seeding, at the Payers Championship Finals sums up things much too well.

Gerwyn Price – The Iceman is having one of those years. Although his 2024 stats are not much different to his career ones he simply is not winning enough big games. His usual combination of match sharpness and winning habit gained from floor wins has not come together this year.

—–ENDS—–

Darts World Extra’s regular look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts, this issue was from DW Extra 17 (June 2024) . Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look:

Rhian O’Suillivan: The former lakeside runner-up is enjoying a fabulous renewal along with the progress of the women’s game. Her victory in the MODUS women’s week keeps up a proud Welsh tradition of darting firsts.

Rob Cross: ‘Voltage’ was one of a clutch of players having a really good 2024 season, but not quite lifting trophies and garnering the attention. He turned that around with a fine victory in New York and defeating three titans in a row to do so.

Gerwyn Price: The Iceman has been claiming, with justification, to be playing well for quite some time, but the results would not translate into event wins. His victory in the nordic Masters was a first PDC title of 2024 and, he will hope, not the last.

Alan Soutar: The popular Scot was already having a decent season on the Pro Tour after a tough 2023. Yet, few would have picked him as the winner of Players Championship 11, but the firefighter from Arbroath produced a superfly consistent display to claim a maiden title.

Gemma Hayter: Another lady player returning to a far more rewarding game after a few years out. June saw the former Hampshire star sign with MODUS, claim an ADC double and win a PDC title. How much more and how quickly….?

Bounceouts

Krzysztof Ratajski: ‘The Polish Eagle’ flatters to deceive almost constantly. His ability is beyond doubt and he has claimed periodic event wins at most levels. Yet, his major and stage efforts have been comparatively underwhelming. Needs to do more!

James Wade: ‘The Machine’ has slipped out of the top 20 in the overall rankings and is not currently in the Pro Tour spots for the World Matchplay. Could James have done his time at the tungsten coalface?

Aileen de Graaf: After what has been a very strong year or two for the Dutchwoman it may be that off board issues are causing her more difficulty than most opponents. After a superb late surge De Graaf turned down her place at the Winter Gardens for another commitment?

Gerwyn Price: In a reverse of the above credit Iceman withdrew from the World Cup with only days to go. For such a physically fit individual, Price seems to have an unhappy knack of being ruled out of events.

Leighton Bennett: As we have seen with other teen prodigies recently, it is important to grasp a shot at redemption with both hands and not make similar mistakes a second time. ‘Boom Boom’ and his management had come a long way only to break down just as….

—–ENDS—-

Darts World Extra’s regular look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts, this issue was from DW Extra 16 (April/May 2024) . Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look:

Martin Schindler: The Wall joins the German tungsten immortals as the third to lift a senior PDC title. He is also headed toward the top 16, German no.1 and owner of a thriving darts brand.

Neil Duff: After a tough spell post Lakeside win in 2022 the Northern Irishman seems to have re-found his mojo. Two weekly wins at the MODUS Super Series a chance for more in Champions week and still ranked no.2 by the WDF.

Richie Howson: The Owl finally lifted that TV trophy at the WDST Champions of Champions in Blackpool. The popular Howson has certainly contributed to the early success of Seniors darts and few would begrudge him his moment in the spotlight.

Andy Boulton: X Factor is another who has started 2024 like a train and just keeps winning regardless of the format , code or anything else. After superb MSS wins and a PDC Challenge Tour double he collelected one of the ADC’s tour titles at the first attempt!

Aileen de Graaf: The Dutch woman may have made headlines for her views on biology recently but she is also in the middle of a superb run of darts. Winner or runner up at a vast array of the biggest events over the last couple of years and seemingly getting better.

Bounceouts

Andy Gilding: Goldfinger seems to be fading from view once again. Andy has always had a habit of returning to virtual obscurity every now and then. This would not be the ideal time to repeat the trick,

Van Peer: A year or so ago saw BvP on the crest of a wave. He was winning all over the map. WDF, Challenge Tour and MODUS level events saw him mopping up points and prize money. Currently the Dutchman can’t buy a win. He will need to reverse this habit soon.

Robert Thornton: The Thorn seems to have gotten stuck. A couple of early exits in the WSDT events that had proven so lucrative for him and a few disappointing spells at MODUS have now been compounded by injury. R&R seems in order for Robert.

James Wade: The Machine is misfiring in quite a serious looking way. Losing 5 out of his last 7 games is unlike previous slumps. James has reversed such down spells before, even returning to win majors, but how often can he repeat such swings?

Trina Gulliver: The Golden Girl has seemed to slump ever since claiming a Women’s Series title. Her decision to miss events and lose out on a spot at the inaugural Women’s World Matchplay looks even worse in hindsight than it did at the time.

Darts World Extra’s regular look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts, this issue was from DW Extra 15 (March 2024) . Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look:

Lukes – It seems that as long as your name is Luke the sky’s the limit in PDC darts. Whether it’s Humphries, Littler, Woodhouse or even Lukeman 2024 is gonna be your year.

Dimitri – Things had been looking tough for the Dancing Belgian. He seemed out of sorts and was sliding quite quickly. Yet, it appears that the courage to seek help, and the work of a psychologist, put him back on track to claiming his second Big 5 major at the UK Open and the first with a crowd.

Gary – Anderson is at it again. Another Pro Tour win, and a final, and some handy wins at the UK and Belgian Opens seem to signal another positive year for the Flying Scotsman.

Danny – The Mullett Jansen is having a fabulous time since losing his tour card. The big haired Dutchman has claimed titles on both the Challenge and Development Tours within weeks and sits handily in both Orders of Merit. He followed up with a decent debut at the MODUS Super Series as well.

Hendo – Another player beginning to thrive without an elite ticket is John Henderson. The new Seniors World Champion dominated after settling in and could be in for a fine year ahead. As could Lisa Ashton who also played superbly at the Circus Tavern, looks close to fully fit and at her best again.

Bounceouts:

Adam – Smith Neale has finally gone too far and looks set for hefty punishment after being videotaped brawling on an oche in Nuneaton. The tempestuous ‘Big Dog’ has been involved in numerous incidents but suspension from the DRA and missing part/all of his final year as a tour card holder…

Ross – Smith has suffered a mix of bad luck and a certain inflexibility since his European Championship triumph in 2022. Smudger continues to play well and records great stats. Yet, he keeps getting beaten, by opponents who seem to find their very best, when it counts.

Ricardo – Pietreczko seems destined to inherit the ever available title of darts’ pantomime villain. From Eric Bristow to Peter Manley and, more recently, Gerwyn Price the tradition is honourable. However it takes some real strength and a very high ability to carry the burden. Does Pikachu have what it takes..?

Adam – Warner is quickly discovering the reverse side of the darts coin. Having had a fabulous baptism, at Q-School 2023, the Sheffield University man seemed to be riding the crest of a wave. He is now in danger of metaphorically drowning…

Devon – Petersen has twice scaled the mountain of elite darts. First, as a fresh faced World championship qualifier and Q School winner, then after falling down the ranks and rebuilding his throw, as a European Tour event winning African Warrior. After another slide down the ranks can the popular South African make it three times a charm?

—–ENDS—–

Our regular lighthearted look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts. This time from Darts World Extra 13 (November 2023) Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look.

Luke Humphries: Cool Hand bagged two ranking majors since our last DWExtra and is simply THE form player right now. He may have also mastered the knack of timing as a place in the Premier League is now a certainty.

Natalie Gilbert: Our Columnist claimed the final Womens Series title of 2023 and set herself up for a bumper 2024 season. Natalie has clocked up a vast array of qtr, semi and final appearances across the codes and events. Could this victory be the first of many?

Gary Anderson: The Flying Scotsman is back, close to his very best on the floor and now showing signs of returning to his fluent stage best as well. Second overall in the Players Championships Order of Merit and seeming happy and content to play again.

Peter Wright: After a bizarrely mixed year Snakebite strung together some fine performances with some MVG darts and bagged a second European Championship. The 53-year-old may not hit the heights every week but is a threat to anyone on any given day.

James Wade: The Machine has always played through peaks and troughs but this can be tougher as sportsmen age.James however also has a fine sense of timing and just as things were looking dicey he finds a major final at the Euros and then a semi at the Grand Slam!

Bounceouts

Michael Smith: Bullyboy is having one of those spells. New kit from Shot darts, defending champion in places and with the biggest target on his back. The Englishman is playing well but then seems to find an average performance. Can he turn things around before the big defence?

Peter Wright: As we hinted above Peter has had the strangest of years. His Grand Slam exit seemed lacklustre in the extreme and such a contrast to the ‘Bullseye’ of the Euros!

Indian Darts: First the Indian qualifying spot was won by a player born in Rugby, based in the UK and plays for Warwickshire. To add insult to injury it appears that the player may miss the event and need to be replaced!

Ross Smith: It’s been a year of truncated title defences with Danny Noppert, MVG and Michael Smith all producing underwhelming efforts at ranking major defences. Smudger’s fairytale 2022 win left many wanting him to do a ‘Joe Johnson’ and go on a run again…

Lakeside: The WDF’s rescheduling has left the venerable old event with more pull-outs than a second rate 90’s porn movie. Hopefully it will settle after their first year’s teething troubles.

Darts World always takes a light hearted look at who is hot, and who is not, in the tungsten tossing world. Originally published in Darts World Extra 12 featured this September’s selections:

Dave Chisnall – Chizzy really does seem to have found his metier in the European Tour formula. His supreme scoring skills flourish over shortish but not cut throat formats. There is a good crowd and atmosphere but not quite the extreme pressure of major TV ranking finals.

Luke Woodhouse – The Bewdley thrower has been on the fringes of the top level for close to a decade. Despite threatening to break through on occasion, a 9-darter in the home tour for example, he must have been wondering if that breakthrough would come. Woody’s qualification for the World Grand Prix and strong performances this year have put that to bed and he has earned his chance at the main events. Harrows must be delighted.

Mikuriu Suzuki – The Japanese double Lakeside champion looked to be slipping in the early days of the Women’s Series. Covid and her huge travel burden seemed to be too much. But, in a turnaround that must be good for the game, The Miracle is right back in the top echelon and is likely to claim qualifying places at the Grand slam and world Championships once again.

Anastasia Dobromyslova – Another much welcomed return is that of another former multiple Word Champion. A previous loss of form and then the current difficulties associated with her Russian heritage, seemed to have dulled this remarkable champion. Recent performances, especially at the PDC Womens Series suggest we have yet to see the last of this historic talent.

Krzysztof Ratajski – The Polish Eagle had seemed to have stalled in mid air in recent months. The Pole – a winner of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy in 2019 – ended his four-year wait for a big stage crown with a series of superb performances at the Sparkassen-Arena to claim the German Darts Open earlier this month.

Bounceouts

Neil Duff – The WDF World Champion seems to be going through the mill. After a promising post Lakeside start he is struggling to carry the burden in almost every format and code. Players in the MSS get a longer look at him, and are determined to KO a world champion and Seniors veterans have a great deal to bring to the table. Either way ‘The Duff Man’ needs to recapture that swagger and confidence before defending his title in December.

Alan Soutar – The popular Scotsman seems to have drifted after an excellent spell. Recent months have seen early knockouts for Soots in Pro Tour events and less of his usual gritty runs. The Arbroath man needs to right the ship if he is to establish himself in that top 32 and then look to go higher.

Adrian Lewis – a Literal bounceout from Jackpot as he steps away from the daily grind of the professional game after 20 years in the very top segment. Tiredness, family illness, and much more, lie behind the decision but the Stoke-on-Trent man is getting fit and looking well after the first few months. Assuming he can find a way to combine his optimal wellbeing with a return, many will welcome him with open arms.

64-128 – It’s going to be tougher in future for those new to the PDC circuit or the journeymen players who fill the lower half of the exclusive club of 128 tour card holders. From the 2024 season all the Pro Tour (Players Championship and qualifying) events are scheduled for midweek. This will require players to be full time professionals or have very flexible working arrangements. Many doubt that there is enough money in the PDC game to justify 64-128 being full time. Currently the 128th player has earned less than £9,000 in almost two years!

WDF Players – The period of goodwill to all dart players is over. Last year’s exceptional circumstance waivers, that gave multiple players the chance to play both Lakeside and Ally Pally, are not going to be re issued and the PDC have severely tightened their criteria going forward. Not only will the higher end players be excluded but so to youth and ladies players alike. Big decisions to be made for the likes of Beau Greaves and Luke Littler.

—–ENDS—–

Our regular lighthearted look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts. This time from the summer of 2023 (Issue DWExtra 11) Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look.

Nathan Aspinall – The Asp is already hugely popular but his Blackpool heroics will lift him another level. Already enjoying a successful time down under he is sure to lead the line more and more in promoting our game.

Beau Greaves – No shock that the Doncaster teenager on this list. Her first PDC major and another 4 Womens Series victories since our last edition, extend a remarkable dominance . The only question left is can she go on a run in one of the PDC major events for which she has again qualified?

Luke Littler – A 16-year-old collecting more than £80,000 for playing non elite level darts by August! The Nuke is writing his own legend at a rapid rate. His defence of the MSS Champions title was a first and a very difficult challenge. Yet he even had time to test different dart set ups along the way.

Betfred – Perhaps the best value for money and enthusiastic sponsorship of a darts event comes from Fred Done’s firm. The last couple of years has seen them embrace the women’s edition and raise £30k plus per annum for Macmillan Cancer Support all whilst seeming to have a tremendous time.

Rob Cross – Voltage finally ended his two year wait for a televised PDC crown earlier this month. He had been flattering to deceive for at least a year. Some superb form was undone with almost random dips. Perhaps he has fully turned the corner now?

Bounce Outs

Martin Adams – Multiple Lakeside Champion has struggled for a while now and even a change of shirt proved ineffectual as Wolfie donned vivid new apparel for his latest MSS appearances. Surely he would be better off restricting his appearances and re-building a little of his champion’s aura?

James Wade – The Machine seems to be on the blink. After a disappointing season James’s top 16 place is under serious threat after more than 15 years. Recent times have seen him leave another management company (TSMC) and seem to concentrate more on other areas of life such as advocacy, charity interests and family. Perhaps it’s a graceful exit he wants?

WDF – Not their first appearance in this list to be sure. The cancellation of the World Masters is a retrograde step by any measure. Everyone will, of course, wish them well in their long term plans but was it really too much to ask to keep some continuity after re-starting such a storied event in 2022?

Tour Card Winners ‘23 – After a decent start this year’s crop of newly minted Tour Card seem to have been flattering to deceive. Players such as Adam Warner, Graham Hall and Robert Owen had superb years in 2022 and looked likely to make an impact. Whilst some such as Gian Van Veen and Richard Veenstra have been solid enough, none are really impressing possibly adding fuel to the theory that it can be better to just miss out and be able to play in all formats.

Our regular lighthearted look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts. This time orginally published in Darts World Extra (Issue 10) for June 2023. Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look.

Team Wales – To win one world cup could be classed as rather good, to get to another final with the same team a couple of years later might be said to be impressive. But, to go all the way and win it again, the following year, is outstanding. If Price and Clayton go on like this the Taylor & Lewis records might be under threat.

Gary Anderson – The Flying Scotsman has found a new lease of life and, if rumours are true, we have Chris Dobey to thank for Ando’s resurgence. Pro Tour wins and finals as well as a run to the World Cup final with Peter Wright suggest that we won’t be bidding Garyy farewell for a while yet!

North American Darts – The PDC’s return to Madison Square Garden was a resounding success with many witnesses saying it has been transformed even from 2022. MVG adding crown to his Premier League won’t have done any harm and nor will Jeff Smith’s run to the final of the Masters.

Leonard Gates – The extrovert American’s decision to forgo the usual route and move straight to a hybrid of WSDT events and other opportunities away from the hugely demanding Pro Tour seems to have worked a treat. The ‘Soulger’ bagged back to back TV crowns with Senior World Masters victory last weekend

Fallon Sherrock – By her own standards it had been a slightly lean spell for the Queen of the Palace but after a strong performance at the MSS recently she seemed to thrive on her MBE award and immediately bagged a Women’s Series title and heads to Balckpool seemingly in fine spirits

Bounce Outs

Brian Raman – Only a couple of years ago The Riddler was WDF number one, was winning large scale opens regularly and had made a very good impression o n his MODUS Live League appearances. Then he won a PDC Tour Card. The evaporation of his confidence, winning ability and thus his results is verging on unsurpassed.

Belgian Darts – The fact that the pairing of van den Bergh and Huybrechts will be better remembered for their hostility and antics than for their superb run to the later stages says all that is needed about this sorry affair. Other nations with similar issues seem to manage them with a touch more discretion…

Ryan Joyce – Relentless has stumbled into another of his poor patches and cannot seem to get out of it. 2023 has yet to reward Ryan with more than a L32 on the Pro Tour and very little else to write home about. 3 years ago he was winning a Players Championship taking out Dave Chisnall in the final.

Paul Lim – Could it be that the light is finally fading from the Singapore Slinger’s unparalleled career? He failed to make this year’s PDC World Championship; we shall not see him in the 2023 WDF event either. He seems to have chosen to opt out of most WSDT events as well. His recent performances have looked lacklustre. Possibly he is tiring easier, rather than getting worse in general. His recent Bronze level WDF win offers some hope…

Richie Howson – It may seem harsh to land a serial TV finalist with the bounce-out tag but Richie really must win one of these events soon. His PDC career could be summed up as one of missed opportunities, and unfulfilled potential. It would be a shame if his WSDT adventure was remembered for multiple runner up spots.

—–ENDS—–

DARTS WORLD’s regular light hearted look at who’s hot, and who’s not, in world darts. This time from Darts World Extra (Issue 3) June 2022 Small incidents can have big consequences. Players and even companies and codes come from nowhere, suddenly move up a level or even dramatically collapse. The signs were there if you’d known where to look.

Bullseyes

Simon Whitlock: Winning the World Cup may be a team achievement but an extra no of recognition must surely go to the Wizard from Aus. A dozen years of trying, two different types of heartache and finally a tremendous vindication. We tip our Jackaroo hats to you!

North American Darts: After several false dawns and decades of being a niche /bar-room sport the combination of the Championship Darts Circuit and the PDC may finally kick start major elite steel tip in the USA and Canada. The quality and depth of home players are rapidly improving and the appetite for PDC style ‘nights at the darts’ could be building.

The Inaugural Eight: 8 Women will make up the inaugural field for July’s Women’s World Matchplay (PDC) see page 35)) whether already famed or just building a career to be the first of something and to have qualified rather than been invited is a superb effort.

Dutch Darts: The opening night of the Dutch Darts Masters was a superb advert for the Netherlands’ best players. 6 Home nation players reaching the quarter-finals was unheard of and although none managed to lift the trophy they were represented in the final by Dirk Van Duivenbode.

The ADC: The nascent amateur darts organisation, which grew out of MAD, has had a strong few weeks. Positive reaction to their first Championship Tour weekend was backed up by a superb ranking battle between Matt Jackson and Adam Atkinson. Their UNDISPUTED belts series also returned and is due a second outing, as is the Championship Tour, near Bristol in July.

Bounceouts:

Trina Gulliver: The ten-time world champion will not take her place in the inaugural Women’s World Matchplay this July. Despite winning a recent Womens Series event and being in a qualifying position The Golden Girl did not attend the last qualifying batch of events and was overtaken. Whether the illness cited or the persuation rumoured is behind this it is a sad error.

CityWest: The popular, with players and media at least, Dublin venue for the World Grand Prix has again had to withdraw from hosting the event. Whilst we are sure that the PDC, and many others, would like to retain the Irish presence (and the Double-In in Dublin tag line) perhaps another long term home will soon be sought?

Peter Wright: June has not proven a victorious spell for the reigning World Champion. Despite seeming to have a superb time, and more than doing his part in terms of selling our game across the globe, Snakebite’s form has taken a dip. In 2021 Peter showed a late developing ability to produce his very best at huge moments can he do it again this Summer and Autumn?

Danny Baggish: The Gambler has hit that spell that seems to hit many non European players attempting to build a professional career. Having to play as many ranking events as possible, in more than one different code/organisation and continent is a huge ask. Despite his talent and popularity Danny seems to be struggling with being a bit of a ‘Jack of All Codes’.

Kim Huybrects: Perhaps the Belgian Hurricane would be better to focus on his oche performance. A return to the top echelon is certainly within his grasp. Yet, he seems determined to become embroiled in social media and other controversy. Perhaps he should reflect on knocking darts biggest growth market and its audience?
