This year’s World Championships signals the retirement from the PDC of one of the most familiar faces to darts fans around the world, M.C. John McDonald, my friend and colleague of around 40 years .

John, a former member of the Parachute regiment, was invalided out of his beloved service after suffering an injury during a training exercise, something that was to change his life forever, as it was while recovering he met a lovely young nurse, Sharon, who was to become his wife.

With a wife and eventually a family to support, John did the “knowledge” and qualified as a London Taxi driver and combined this with a position at the BBC as a freelance photographer, which was how I first met him and our long friendship began.

The first thing I found with John is he is a friendly ,good hearted man, always looking to offer help when needed, who will have you in stitches with his tremendous sense of humour, I am convinced he would have been a top stand up comic had he wished.

A conversation and challenge from Barry Hearn, who was looking for a new M.C, had John climbing through the ropes for one of Matchroom’s Boxing promotions. Where most of us would have been daunted at the prospect of standing in the middle of a ring announcing to millions watching at home and thousands in the arena, it had no fear for a man who was used to earning his living by flinging himself out of a plane high above the ground.

JOHN’S DARTS DEBUT: (PARTY POKER.COM DARTS CHALLENGE) 21/11/04 CIRCUS TAVERN, PURFLEET, ESSEX.

John proved to be a natural and so a glittering career began. Boxing, Snooker, 9 Ball Pool, Golf, Ten Pin Bowling, Fishing, Rugby, Award Evenings, I have had the privilege of working alongside him at them all over the years, however it was not until the 2004 showdown between Phil Taylor and Andy Fordham that John got his first crack at Darts.

The much publicised event became a baptism of fire but it would prove to be not the only time John’s cool head would diffuse what could have become a tricky situation. The Circus Tavern was stiflingly hot, when Andy Fordham appeared to slump, facing downwards staring at the Oche, clearly in distress he was led from the stage and was sat in a chair outside the back door of the venue, where with quick thinking, John pulled out the pipe for the air conditioning unit and hosed the stricken “Viking” down with cool air.

His body temperature came down but with the crowd becoming more and more restless it became apparent the Dartford man could not continue, again John’s coolness in adversity proved invaluable as he grabbed Barry Hearn and Phil Taylor and led them back to the Stage. ”Ladies and Gentleman “ he announced, “Andy is recovering but due to medical advice he will be unable to continue, however he has requested that Phil receives the trophy he rightly deserves” with that Barry presented the trophy the crowd cheered and broke into a chorus of ”There’s only one Andy Fordham”, crisis averted.

In 2006 Raymond Van Barneveld switched codes and joined the PDC and his debut appearance would be in the Premier League at Kings Georges Hall, Blackburn. Prior to the SKY broadcast going live John went on stage, as he always does, to entertain the crowd with his jokes combined with the announcement of the evening’s match schedule.

The name of Raymond van Barneveld, who, in the past had not been over complimentary towards the PDC, was met with boos from the audience, John let the noise abate and then addressed them “Ladies and Gentlemen, Raymond van Barneveld has made a brave decision by leaving the BDO to join us here, please show him the respect he so richly deserves.”

When he walked on for his match against Ronnie Baxter the jeers had turned to cheers and the Barney Army was born, not only had John’s words calmed another tricky situation he had created a movement!

The 2007 World Final was to be the retirement of original MC Phil Jones. John became the M.C at all of the PDC events and in the years that have followed he has become a face of the PDC as recognisable to the fans as any of the players, something he never let go to his head and he remains that same approachable, level headed, funny man he has always been.

On a Personal level we have shared many good times, many laughs, many funny moments and he has made time away from our families as bearable as possible.

The biggest tribute I can give him that in our hardest times during covid, when we were in our work bubbles, locked away from our loved ones for days and weeks, it was John who, in those long hours of confinement, kept the players, officials, staging crew and PDC staff, spirits up with his multitude of funny stories and seemingly endless pool of jokes.

He has set a very high bar and he is going to be a hard act to follow.

Thank you, “There is only one John McDonald!”

—–ENDS—–

In my past role as official PDC photographer I was in a very privileged position which enabled me to produce photographs in ways that had not been attempted before.

One such image could be called a “Board’s Eye View” although in reality the angle was from just above the board and was taken during the 2017 World Championship Final on the famous Alexandra Palace stage.

If the photo looks familiar to viewers of Darts on TV that’s because with the help of two of Sky’s best camera operators, Dave Jenkinson and Mark Sheridan, who provided the broadcasters excellent coverage from their unseen positions behind the set, allowed me to join them for part of the match.

Sharp eyed fans will have noted the small round hole in the backdrop above the boards ‘double tops’ with a camera lens slightly protruding from it.

For me to get that same shot Dave and Mark set their camera very precisely to create a small space for me to place my lens alongside theirs.

There were further practicalities to overcome, firstly the lens would have to be pre-focused and locked off as it would not be possible to do so during the game as I would be holding the camera above my head, and I would be unable to look through the viewfinder.

With this in mind, before the final began I went on stage and stood on the Oche and focused on the board, reasoning the focal point would be the same ,only in reverse.

Secondly there could be no sound from the shutter that would disturb the players, so I set the shutter release to single shot and wrapped the camera in a towel to suppress even the slightest noise.

Thirdly, and most crucially, I would be completely blind to what was happening on the other side of the hoarding, again Dave and Mark came up with the solution by rigging a monitor for me to see the proceedings on the stage and fire my camera accordingly as the players threw their darts.

Lastly I explained to all concerned what I intended to do and check they were all agreeable to it, fortunately neither finalist or any of the officials objected and I was in business.

Midway through the final ,during a break between sets, I went behind the set and climbed the ladder onto the hidden camera platform and, when the match resumed, I began taking my photos and continued to do so until the next break, satisfied I had all I needed, I went back into the arena for the duration of the game.

Afterwards it gave me great pleasure when I learned that neither player had realised I had indeed been behind the board at any time in the match.

As the sporting world continues to marvel at and celebrate the exploits of teenage sensation Luke Littler, who seems to set new boundaries each time he steps onto the Oche, darts is moving into a new era with the emergence of young and even younger talent.

I first saw Littler in action in 2020 when he reached the final of the JDC Super 16’s where he lost to another young gun now on the Pro Tour, Keane Barry. Even then, at such a young age, it was clear to see how good these youths are, but even before that night on the Masters stage in Milton Keynes, I had witnessed the seismic shift the game is about to experience.

In 2019 I had been engaged to be the official photographer at a series of corporate darts tournament events organised , on behalf of software provider SAP, by company executive Matthew Jeffrey and Jon Archers Nevada Management, featuring a star studded array of the biggest names in the sport plus youngsters Beau Greaves and Leighton Bennett.

The Tournaments were held in London, Frankfurt and Prague in front of live audiences and streamed on the internet around the globe.

In London, within the walls of the historic Tower of London, with the Yeoman of the Guard in attendance, billed as ’The Power at The Tower-The Prince v The King’ Leighton Bennett took on Phil Taylor and pushed the 16 time champion of the world all the way before narrowly losing.

His efforts that evening caused ripples which were about to become shock waves, when less than 3 months later, the 13 year old schoolboy was drawn against the 16 time World Champion beneath the chandeliers in the grandeur of Frankfurt’s Palmengarten.

Playing with youthful freedom and without any sign of nerves ‘Boom Boom” took the game to the legendary Taylor, 45 years his senior, who had won his first world title 15 years before the lad from Lincoln was born.

It was a short format game and Bennett raced ahead and sensing a special moment, I decided to go for a wide angle shot and as the winning double nestled in the bed to seal a 4-1 win, Bennett turned and jumped for joy while “The greatest of all time”, who treats every match with equal importance, looked stunned at what had just happened.

SAP DARTS SLAM

The image and reports of Leighton’s win was splashed across the sports pages the next morning of many national newspapers and leading media outlets.

With Bennett and Littler now on the Pro Tour and both hitting 9 darters in their first floor event, I do not think it will be long before we see them playing each other in a final as they lead the charge of these new, young and fearless, hotshots.

Exciting times for the game lay ahead as we see the fruition of the Junior and Youth systems so championed by former World number one, Rod Harrington.

”It’s all about the Youth!” as “The Prince of Style ‘ would often say!

—–

See ‘One Shot’ at is very best. Grab a copy of Darts World magazine to see these superb images in top quality print. (This one appears in Issue 585)

Gary Anderson starting 2024 with another Players Championship win re,minded us of this fabulous pice from our Ally Pally special. Lawrence Lustig’s One Shot column features some truly superb imagery:

Around every sporting contest, as well as what is going on in front of you, there is more often many other photo opportunities for a photographer to capture around the event.

The excellent Times Chief Sports Photographer Marc Aspland and his colleague Bradley Ormesher, capture these moments so well in their regular photo led feature “Sport Unseen” where images which are not used in the daily edition to accompany a report are published to give a more in depth look at sport.

In 2019 I was privileged to be asked by the Times to be the first non-staff photographer to do an “Unseen Gallery” and it would also be the first time darts had been featured in the series.

I chose the photos I thought would make an impact on the page and be interesting and informative to a readership that ,in reality, would probably not be followers of the game.

Fan participation has always been an important part of a night at “The Darts” and their enjoyment is something I always tried to portray. One such opportunity arose at the 2019 World Championship Quarter-Finals and I felt it had to be part of my portfolio showcasing darts at it’s best.

As Gary Anderson took on Dave Chisnall for a place in the semi-final ,along with his wife Rachel, in the players section, he had his number one fan, his young son Tai, decked out in a replica of his dads shirt and wearing foam fingers on his hands.

The bond between father and son was clear for all to see as Gary waved to him from the stage at every break and Tai cheered every shot, standing on his chair to see over the barrier waving back with ,what seemed on him to be, the two giant fingers.

Just seeing the shear joy on Tai’’s face as he watches his dad in action, makes this image, one of my own personal favourites of all my darts photographs.

Darts is one of the most challenging sports to photograph, the playing area is small, there is no physical challenge or contact between the participants nor is there a finishing line to be crossed or wickets or goalposts to be aimed at.

The nature of the game is one of hand-eye coordination which is played mostly at a constant rhythm with very little ,if any, change in a player’s throw from one dart to the next, much like they are playing to the beat of a metronome.

I have always tried to cover the sport as interestingly and uniquely as possible , trying to capture the big moments that pictorially tell the story of the match, encompassing the atmosphere of the event and pushing my own photographic skills to satisfy my passion for my work and our great game.

From an early age I loved seeing the work of the great sports photographers of our time, especially those of the late Monte Fresco on the pages of the Daily Mirror or Neil Leifer in the magazine “Sports Illustrated” with their incredible photos of Muhammad Ali.

One such image was of “The Greatest” performing the “Ali shuffle” on one stunning, multi exposure, photograph. I was and still am, in awe of its brilliance and I had long thought how interesting it would be to do a similar image depicting a darts player’s throw.

I did not want to produce it in a studio ,as the Ali photo had been,I wanted to challenge myself to do it during a ‘live’ event.

At the 2019 World Grand Prix at the City West Hotel ,the opportunity presented itself. For my multi exposure to work many things had to align. The stage lighting could not leave even a hint of shadow and there could be nothing in the background which also had to be black.

The semi final between Chris Dobey and Michael Van Gerwen was perfect.

Using my Canon EOS 1DX MK11’s multi-exposure facility set at 3 images per frame, I got myself in the perfect position at the side of the stage, with an ISO of 3200 and camera speed of 640th of a second at an aperture of F4 I set about the task.

I quickly realised that the shot would be more effective of Chris than Michael due to the colour of their respective shirts, Michaels green stood out too much, also although it was all on one photo there had to be distinction between each individual image.

To my delight I’d cracked it, three images yes, but all on ‘One Shot”!

As a schoolboy I was captivated by the space race, and in July 1969 ,not yet in my teens,I like millions of others , was thrilled as I watched grainy black and white images on my television of the luna module from Apollo 11, carrying Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, touch down on the surface of the moon and the world heard a beep ,followed by a crackly voice declaring, “The Eagle Has Landed!’

It was an incredible moment to realise that when I looked up that night into the dark sky at the bright object which often looks like a giant smiley face looking down on us ,that human beings had finally reached this far off piece of rock that orbits our planet.

I remember my feeling of utter amazement as Neil Armstrong climbed down the landing crafts ladder and become the first person to step onto the surface of the moon and he uttered the immortal words” one small step for man but a giant leap for mankind”.

My reminisce of this historic event from days gone bye, in Darts World ,may seem irrelevant, but that magnificent moment was my inspiration for this “One Shot”

As a photographer I always try to think “out of the box” as I strive to produce something that is different, interesting and pertinent.

The 2019 World Matchplay Championship was taking place at it’s traditional venue of the beautiful Winter Gardens in Blackpool and it coincided with the 50th Anniversary of that momentous day ,which had so captured my young imagination, when “humans dared to go where no humans had been before”.

In the weeks prior to the tournament I thought endlessly of how I could combine that youthful excitement with my now professional life into one special image that would celebrate both events.

To accomplish this I did not want something false, something manipulated in photoshop or any other computer programme, it had to be a photograph created purely by photographic skills.

The answer came to me in my ultra-wide 8mm lens that makes the subject of a photo look spherical and floating in a black background.

That gave me the how ,but what about the where. After years of covering the tournament and countless hours in the iconic venue I racked my brains as the best place to capture the image ,which I admit, had become an obsession.

There were many options around the venue, until I realised ,there was only one place to get the photo I had in my mind, and that was from above the Oche looking out towards the players and the audience.

I went around to the back of the stage and climbed ladders secured to the sections of crossed metal tubing which the set is attached to and on to the rickety scaffolding boards at the top where I finally nailed my tribute to those pioneers of space exploration and the more terrestrial stars entertaining us with my version of ‘Planet Darts” ( Or even Darts World)…..I hope you all think it was worth the effort!

Throughout my career as the official PDC photographer I had always looked for different ways of capturing the action, ways in which the sport and the participants had not been photographed before.

I was intent on getting shots that did not just show a player throwing a dart ,I wanted to portray these highly skilled ,highly competitive sports men and women in the same way that those in other sports are projected. My aim was to capture the moments of their triumphs , of their disappointments ,showing the joy of winning and the despair of defeat and illustrating the fun, the fans and all the razzamatazz that makes today’s game so successful and the top players so recognisable.

The World Championships have become as much a part of Christmas as Turkey and Brussel sprouts and stands alongside the other events that make up the Jewels of the annual sporting calendar. For 16 days the best players on the planet battle it out for the ultimate accolade of “Champion of the World”.

On New Years Day 2020 for the final between Peter Wright and Michael Van Gerwen, I arrived at the historic Alexandra Palace at lunchtime having arranged with my colleagues at Sky TV to clamp a remotely triggered camera high above the stage in the lighting nest. I have never been a lover of heights or ladders but in the words of Dianna Ross and The Supremes song ,it was “Up The Ladder To The Roof” to securely attach the camera to the rigging and attempt to get a unique photo of the champion lifting the trophy.

If being on top of a ladder with my head wedged between the stage lights was a challenge for me ,the next step was even harder, stretching my neck to look through the viewfinder to angle and focus the camera with one hand ,on the area below me , where experience led me to expect the the winner to celebrate, while firmly gripping the top rung with the other.

Pre-sets checked and completed it was time to put the camera to “sleep” and get back down to terra firma, have a strong “cuppa” and prepare for the final.

The “Peoples Palace” was packed to the rafters as ’Snakebite’ and ‘Mighty Mike’ battled it out with the Scotsman triumphing 7-3 to claim his first World Title.

As MC John McDonald introduced the presentation party ,I took my position in front of the Oche and awakened my remote camera and as Peter received the Sid Waddell Trophy and raised it above his head, the canons shot out the ticker tape and wirelessly, I fired my remote camera.

After anxiously waiting for the arena to clear , I could now climb back up to retrieve the camera and hope that I had triggered it at the right moment. Nervous with expectation I scrolled through the images and to my delight I had nailed it and got the photo I had hoped for, mission accomplished!

——

Lawrence Lustig is a former official photographer to the PDC. For the technically minded he fixed a pocket wizard wireless receiver to the flash mount on a Canon 1D MK 11 N with a 16mm-35mm zoom lens set at 16mm with an exposure of 1/640th sec at f4.5 on 1600 iso triggered by pocket wizard transmitter linked to his Canon 1DX Mk 11.

NESTLED in the shadow of the QE2 bridge that crosses the River Thames at Dartford and sitting amidst the Warehouses and Industrial Units just off the busy A13 that joins London and Essex for freight and commuter traffic is The Circus Tavern , the pub venue that is etched into the history of Darts .

Surrounded by a car park close to a Petrol Station, this unassuming building which had seen the Stars of the Day like Joe Longthorne, Chas and Dave ,Hot Chocolate and the legendary Drifters on its stage and had become synonymous with the PDC World Championships before the juggernaut of a tournament outgrew its intimate home and moved to the grander, bigger Alexandra Palace atop a hill overlooking the capital city.

Phil Taylor was the undisputed King of Purfleet ,competing in all 14 finals at the venue ,winning 11 of them, but there were other stars that created many memorable moments under the bright TV lights illuminating the small low stage.

One such special moment came in the 2006 championship. As usual the Tavern was packed to the rafters and although snow lay on the ground outside, inside the tight arena, the temperature was red hot as two of the most popular players on the circuit at the time, Alan Warriner-Little and Andy ”The Pieman” Smith battled it out for a place in the Quarter-Finals.

Unlike today, there were no barriers ,the tables were within touching distance from the edge of the stage and players made their way to the Oche through the crowd who would stand aside for them as they made their entrance.

The experienced Alan Warriner-Little was locked at 2-2 in a tense 3rd round tussle with Andy ”The Pieman” Smith, who had become a cult hero amongst the fans.

Smith led in sets 5 and 6 only for the old hand from Cumbria to hit back and take both sets to win the tie 4-2 and as Alan hit the winning double he set off on an impromptu lap of honour ,arms aloft he headed across the stage and back before stepping out onto the tables and walking the length of the Tavern ,taking the acclaim and slapping hands as he celebrated in the most unique way I have ever seen or photographed at a darts tournament.

As the match had reached its finale the packed audience was on it’s feet cheering both men, often obscuring my shot ,and with no photographers platforms at this time, I decided move to the slightly raised area at the side of the hall, it proved to be a good decision as Alan Warriner-Little became the one and only player to do a celebratory “Walk-off”!

For the camera enthusiasts I used a Canon 1d mk11 at 500th of a second with a 135mm lens at f2.8 at 3200 iso.

World Championship debutant “Big Willie” was drawn against former World Youth Champion Bradley Brooks in what was to become one of the greatest first-round matches the Alexandra Palace crowd had ever seen.

As they entered the famous old building which stands high above the London skyline, with views of the iconic Olympic, Emirates, and Tottenham Hotspur stadiums below, few fans could imagine the sporting drama that was about to unfold before them, equal to any of the magical moments witnessed in those theatres of dreams.

Having been whitewashed in the first set Borland hit back to level. The two players went toe to toe throwing darts that belied their age, experience when at two sets all and two games all we entered a sudden death leg.

By now, expecting an explosion of emotion from whoever wins I have left the photographers platform, and taken a position sitting on top of the “walk on steps” at the front of the stage in line with the “Oche” as Referee Kirk Bevans sings out ‘180’ as Willie takes out a maximum on his first visit, then, such is the speed of the match, quickly follows up with a 177. The noise is deafening as the crowd will the young Scot on….

With my camera pointing through the bars of the safety rail, Borland, seemingly oblivious to the ensuing pandemonium all around and without hesitation, throws treble 20, treble 20, double 12! The decibels reach a new level as it seems the roof is about to come off as the dart flies into the thin red bed.

My intuition to move position pays off as Willie runs and leaps across the stage towards me, mouth wide open and eyes popping, as he makes history becoming the first debutant and first player ever to hit a 9 darter to win a televised match at the World Championships leaving his opponent Bradley looking on in stunned amazement.

It’s a moment that he,I, those in attendance, and those watching on TV here and around the world, will never forget.

FEBRUARY 2006, a mere 10 days after the official announcement that Raymond Van Barneveld would be joining the PDC circuit, the great MC John McDonald strode onto the stage at Blackburn’s St.George’s Hall and announced the names for that year’s Premier League.

As he called the name of the great Dutch player who for so long had been a stalwart of the rival BDO, a chorus of boos rang out from sections of the crowd.

At that moment the doyen of MCs that John McDonald is, took the situation by the scruff of the neck and quelled the hecklers as he told them how courageous Raymond had been in crossing the divide and that he had done it to challenge the best.

As the jeers turned to cheers and his debut turned into a one-sided 8-1 defeat of Ronnie Baxter, the Barney Army was born.

By 2019, Raymond had achieved all he could in the game and started to struggle with form. He had previously announced his intention to retire at the end of the season.

Already eliminated from the league, Raymond had one last match, against his great friend, rival and fellow Dutchman, Michael van Gerwen and it was in a packed Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam where it seemed that all but a few were wearing Orange shirts, the majority adorned with the name Barney.

I knew this was a special moment, one where I needed to show Barney with his Army. I got onto the back edge of the stage*, out of TV camera shot as the arena darkened and the orange spotlights, like searchlights in the night sky danced around the venue.

Then a spine-tingling roar, as a single white light picked out Raymond waiting at the end of the walkway, “Eye of the Tiger” started blasting out through the PA system, only to be drowned out by the crowd singing “ Barney Army”.

Up the steps, the great man came with a smile and a nod in my direction, then onto the centre of the stage in front of an adoring crowd.

“Please, please Ray don’t just salute them, do the full Barney, back arched, arms outstretched above your head” I was saying to myself.

A moment’s pause, and then as if he had heard me, he did his trademark celebration and I and 14,000 others will have a moment we will never forget.

Van Barneveld bids farewell to Rotterdam ( LAWRENCE LUSTIG)

Unfortunately for Raymond, his last game in the Premier League was not to have that fairytale ending, as Michael put any sentiment and friendship aside, to produce a thoroughly professional performance and win 7-1.

Raymond always wears his heart on his sleeve and in his sky interview after the match,he announced his immediate retirement, which he later reversed.

*For the technically minded I used a Canon 1dx MK11 at 1600 ISO at 400th of a second at f 3.5 on a 16mm lens to show the whole scene and balance the bright lights of the stage and the duller lighting of the crowd
