1993 - Issue 246: WDC seen as Challenge To The WDF. Ban Widened.

By DW Editorial Staff 25/07/2020

Not content with ensuring WDC players could not play in competition or even exhibition in the UK the BDO sought to extend the ban to all associated countries via its 'sister' organisation the WDF:

A saving grace was that the WDF left it to its member organisations to decide whether to ban the players by using existing rules. Fortunately, for the 16, many chose to ignore such advice. Nations such as Canada and Australia as well as many on mainland Europe simply allowed anyone to enter in the usual manner.

This provided valuable darts time, and income, for some of the WDC 16 as well as giving players and fans in other nations the opportunity to see some of the game's biggest names. It may also explain some of why the PDC has always had an international focus.
