Exclusive - Matt Porter: "Aiming for a regular Matchplay"

By Editorial Staff 04/06/2021

PDC boss, and now Chairman of Matchroom Multi Sports Events, Matthew Porter has been speaking exclusively to Darts World magazine for our next issue. Amongst the topics of conversation, with our lead writer Paul Woodage, was the upcoming Betfred World Matchplay.

The Blackpool event has long been a showcase for the PDC with the iconic venue of the Winter Gardens providing a hugely popular setting for, what many fans consider, the best event in the PDC calendar. After the disappointment of a fan-free Matchplay in 2020, despite the fairytale victory of Dimitri van den Bergh, it seems Matthew had always earmarked this year's event as a possible return to normality:

“As soon as the vaccine roll-out began at the end of last year, we always had our minds set to mid-2021 as a return to normality...."

The recent return of fans for the closing stages of the Premier League has affirmed Porter's view that they are an essential and special ingredient in darts that has been much missed:

"All the players thrived on the experience of once again performing in front of fans but for him - Jonny Clayton - to lift the trophy in that atmosphere gave the tournament an authentic feeling."

It is clear from the conversation that Porter is focused on looking forward and that his recent elevation, and the arrival of Eddie Hearn, ensure both continuity and innovation, Mathew added:

“Becoming the Chairman of Multi-Sport Events is an exciting new position. I began with Matchroom twenty years ago, working on pool, snooker, fishing, etc... but this new role hasn’t really affected my duties within the organisation."

His thoughts are, for now, focused on getting normality back to the sport and for fans to return and add the magic ingredient that makes darts very special:

"It’s our goal to have a regular World Matchplay in Blackpool - and that means a full and very lively Winder Gardens.”
