Gerwyn Price will come into the Premier League still as the world’s number one dart player but will be wary that he has yet to lift the premier league in what will be his third premier league campaign. The Iceman missed out on last years premier league after returning a positive Covid test.
“What was more disappointing was that I was unable to play this last year, testing positive with covid and I’m just sitting in the house. Not watching it because I couldn’t pull myself to watch it”.
Price remains confident that he can win his first Premier League title but has reiterated that he needs to make the playoffs first with the Iceman finishing fifth in both of his previous tournaments.
“The first target is to get to the last four and then go ahead and pick the trophy up”.
The world number one, known as Gezzy to his friends, also made clear that he “has to get out of the blocks quick as the fewer points you pick up in the early weeks, the more pressure you’re under”.
Price also referred that the “world championship didn’t go to plan” after losing an epic match to Michael Smith in the quarter-finals in which Price outlined his frustration towards the crowd.
The Iceman will get the chance though to play in his home country and in front of his home fans on night one of the Premier League.
“It’s a different tournament now, back to Cardiff and back to full crowds which is good so looking forward to the Premier League”.
“The crowds always good for me in Cardiff, been here twice before and it’s only three and a half thousand people so it’s actually one of the smaller venues in the Premier League, but it’s the best atmosphere”
Price is also excited with the brand-new look to this year’s premier league with a new format staging and seven matches now guaranteed on each night of the tournament. The Iceman is pleased by the new official board manufacturer/sponsor Winmau and is relishing the prospect of now being able to play on the new Blade 6 on the big stage.
“It’s going to be good, it’s going to be different, I don’t play my best stuff until I get to the quarters, and hopefully, I bring my best game week in week out”.
Price will open his account in Cardiff tonight as he faces James Wade in the second match of the night.
