Thornton & Anderson Impress in Senior Service

Red Dragon Darts

Robert Thornton shone on the opening night of World Senior Darts World Championship. The scot produced a sustained spell of heavy scoring to move into the second round.

The Thorn had the difficult task of battling 1988 World Champion and three-time World Master Bob Anderson and it was clear from the start that he was not underestimating the task. Thornton hit 180s regularly from the start and refused to allow The Limestone Cowboy to settle in.

Anderson battled bravely but Thornton, the younger, and more currently active, of the two men, was the better player throughout. The Scot was never really troubled by the colourful former World Champion, although we did see glimpses of the old Anderson. A 116 checkout in the first set a highlight.

The Thorn entered the tournament as one of the favourites, and this performance will not have dented those chances. He finished the match in style winning the final set in just 42 darts. An average of 107. Those familiar with the MODUS Live League will know this to be a regular occurrence from Thornton who still playing at an almost elite standard and is highly active.

The moment of the match, and possibly the opening evening, belonged to Anderson. At the last moment, he delighted the live audience, and those watching elsewhere, with his signature finger point. The crowd had had to wait until his final 3 darts of the match to see it, but the Limestone Cowboy produced the 180 visit just before Thornton hit double 20 for the match.

The Circus Tavern Crowd responded by surging to their feet and even Thornton bowed in appreciation. A match and a moment this event was made for!
