News of The World Darts: Hall of Fame

Play the Pro Darts Scorer

The News of the World was one of the first ‘major’ organised darts championships, beginning in 1927.

The NoTW became England’s first national darts competition from 1947, as the years went by it gradually became international essentially becoming the first world darts Championship. It was the possibly hardest darts tournament to win, owing to the cut-throat, best of three throughout, format, until its demise in 1990.

The event was also the first to receive national television coverage. In 1979, Bobby George (who won again in 1986) became the first player to win the championship without losing a leg, the final winner of the original run, Paul Cook, is claimed to have matched this. Sweden’s Stefan Lord, another two-time winner was the only player from outside the United Kingdom to win the event.

There was also a brief revival of the event with SKY TV in 1996/97, but it is now discontinued. It was originally organised by the National Darts Association of Great Britain (NDAGB).

Few players managed more than one victory in the event and even less managed them back to back. Tom Barrett in the 1960s was the first to win two in a row.

See if you can spot the legends of the game as they appear in finals or claim the title:
