Haupai Puha was amongst the Final 8 to qualify for the 2023 WDF World Cup Men’s Singles Quarter Finals in Esbjerg, after beating Danny Lauby II 4-3 averaging 12 points higher than the American international.
Hopes will want to follow in World Cup partner Darren Herewini’s footsteps, after Apocalypse claimed the last Men’s Singles Gold back in 2019. The possibility of consecutive Gold’s for New Zealand is still on the table, and Haupai will return on Friday to contest the Quarter Finals where he will face Carles Arola.
Former Super Series weekly winner and reigning Dutch Open champion Berry van Peer is also into the Last 8 in Denmark, including a 101.76 average to defeat Team England member Reece Colley 4-2 in the Last 64.
The Dutchman will face American Bruce Robbins on Friday, with Bruce defeating last week’s MODUS winner Andreas Harrysson and Jamie Bain to secure his place in the Quarter Finals.
The Final of the Girls singles has been confirmed with Irish international Rebecca Allen who appeared in the Semi Finals of the WDF Europe Cup, taking on England’s Paige Pauling who will partner with Team 360-star Hannah Meek in the Final of the Pairs Event on Friday against Scotland.
Paige defeated one of the Team Scotland team in Sophie McKinlay 3-1 with an average just shy of 73, before confirming her place in the Final with a whitewash win over Mariam Abdelhafez.
Hannah Meek was a match away from making it an all-English Final, but lost in the Semi Finals against Allen, who navigated her way out of last leg deciders in both the Last 16 and the Quarter Finals. The Irish youngster came out a 4-2 winner in the Semi Finals, going one game away from bringing home a Gold for Ireland in the Girls Singles.
The Men’s Pairs Finals will take place later today with New Zealand duo Haupai Puha and Ben Robb taking on Scotland represented by Davie Kirwan and Danny Trueman in Denmark.
The Final will be live streamed on Friday, after the two pairs confirmed their spots back on the opening day, with New Zealand defeating Austrian duo Hannes Schnier and Markus Straub 5-2 whilst Scotland claimed a last leg decider (5-4) over Hungarian pair Lehel Kaman and Joszef Rucska.
The Women’s Pairs Final will also take place with England represented by reigning WDF Champion Beau Greaves and 7 Time Scottish Open champion Deta Hedman, taking on Finland duo Sari Sauvola and Kirsi Viinikainen.
Both pairs from Finland qualified for the Last 16 in Esbjerg, with Beau and Arrow and the Heart of Darts defeating Kaisu Rekinan and Tia Parnanen 4-1.
The action from the 2023 WDF World Cup of Darts continues Friday with the Men/ Women’s Team competitions continuing until the Final, whilst the Girls Pairs, Boys Pairs Finals and the Men’s Singles Quarter Finals also take place on Day 4 in Denmark.
