Gilbert’s Bar was the setting for the Gilbert’s Bar Bank Holiday Monday 301 Knockout and despite the event being arranged at very short notice it attracted some thirty-seven players.
DW’s Coach (AIM180) always likes to see a 301 DIDO event held in that area. Many local leagues play version of the format and the standard can be remarkable.
Midland darts legend Dennis Stokes used to say: “301 double start is a man’s game. Anyone can hit one double to win a game, but hitting two, in such a short format, takes real skill and nerve.” As ‘Stokesy‘ was from a bygone era should forgive the ‘man’s game’ remark and replace it with ‘true test’, but his point is well taken.
As the knockout approached the final stages Simon Pritchard, Andy Jervis, Rob Pierce and Rob Thompson all made their exits in the quarter-finals and joining them after the semi-finals were Dan Nicholls and Rob Pitt who received £40 for their efforts.
The final was fought out between Ryan O’Connor and Chris Hill with O’Connor collecting the winner’s top prize of £150 and runner-up Hill picking up £85.
