Hendo’s Hatrick: Seniors Masters Triumph Seals Highlander’s Treble

John Henderson completed a hat-trick of senior TV titles with a nail-biting victory in the BetGoodwin World Seniors Darts Matchplay in Sunderland.

‘Hendo’ defeated fellow Scot Robert Thornton 6-5, coming back from two sets down twice to take the title and lift the trophy.

The Highlander had already claimed the World Seniors Championship and World Seniors Matchplay, before pocketing the £10,000 first prize on Saturday night with his third major success of 2024.

The Huntly thrower that his ambition is to win his PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) tour card back so he can return to playing the world’s best players. He won the World Cup of Darts with Peter Wright for Scotland in 2021 and has had quarterfinal runs in multiple major events.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said after Saturday’s title win. “Just to get over the line was fantastic.”

Henderson defeated three Englishmen in Scott Mitchell, Matt Clark and Paul Hogan to reach the final against Thornton, where he was down and staring at final hurdle defeat.

The popular Scot pulled it back to force deciding set, which has to be won by two clear legs, which turned into a thriller with Hendo eventually throwing a 100 checkout for a 5-3 success to claim the trophy.

The 51-year-old has now been crowned a TV champion three times in 2024, but will still look to return to the PDC Tour via Q School in January 2025.
