The third global darts title contested in December 2024 saw Devon Petersen was victorious on Saturday as he was crowned the inaugural ADC Global Finals Champion, after defeating Adam Lipscombe in the final and claiming the £25,000 top prize.
There were all the classic ingredients of such championships: fairytales, final hurdle falls, local glory and some tremendous quality darts.
The ADC has always claimed itself as the ultimate organisation fore discovering new talent as well as provided a parachute or trampoline for those who have enjoyed time at the elite professional level.
The Global Championship proved to be a fabulous illustration of the amateur game’s strengths as a relative newcomer nurtured by amateur darts took on ‘Dancing Devon’ who has previously performed at the highest levels the professional game has to offer.
Petersen, who entered the finale having won Week Two qualification less than 24 hours prior, reached the final by recording victories against Shane Hayward in the Quarter Finals and Darryl Pilgrim in the last four, to set up a clash with Adam Lipscombe.
The two week tournament had built to a highly entertaining final day when the 8 qualifiers, from twenty four original international starters, battled for the first ADC global crown.
Lipscombe’s run to the final saw the winner of Week One record victories against Charlie Martin and Bradley Brooks to set up an intriguing clash versus Petersen.
Would the relatively inexperienced Lipscombe, who has grown on the MODUS Live Lounge stage, maintain his strong Portsmouth form and overcome the former PDC tour card holder and European Tour event winner?
In the finale, it was darting demolition from Petersen. ‘The African Warrior’ averaged close to 100 as he dispatched his English opponent, 9-3, to claim a first ADC Global Finals crown as well as the £25,000 first prize.
Devon’s victory was all the more remarkable as he had not been slated to play. Indeed his organisation to promote African darts had helps to facilitate others playing in the qualification events and in the MODUS Super Series this year. However, a visa difficulty meant that the qualified player could not travel and Devon was asked to step in to represent the continent.
I just wanted to make Africa, South Africa and Cape Town proud. We play for our own personal glory and of course there’s financial gain but for me having The African Warrior on my back, there’s a lot more that comes with it.
2024 ADC Global Champion: Devon Petersen
Sadly the ADC Global Championship may have suffered a little from its calendar position between Lakeside (WDF) and PDC World Championship as well being hot on the heals of the bumper Autumn/Winter season. Like all such new events we suspect there will be tweaks and refinements as time wears on.
However, the event provided two weeks of interesting and high quality darts, with an unusual format for a global event, and a highly entertaining climax. We look forward to the next edition.
Action at the Live Lounge returns on January 6th with the second edition of Women’s Week taking place, with the field to be confirmed in due course. Play will commence from 9:30 GMT and will be streamed live on the Modus YouTube channel or via various bookmaker’ websites worldwide.
