The Concierge UK Senior Darts Tour rolled into Harlow, Essex this weekend for a tungsten-fuelled few days and a nostalgic catch-up on the oche for many familiar faces.
Once the pleasantries were out of the way, it was Andrew Denning who took top honours on Friday night, defeating Paul Hogan 5-1 in the final – both averaging a respectable mid-70s.
Apparently, Denning goes by the nickname Dangerous – somewhat ironic considering he was up against a man who once famously wrestled crocodiles. But after a solid run to the final for Hogan, it was the Devon man who had the sharper bite.
With typical tenacity and guile, Hogan bounced back on Saturday to claim the singles knock-out crown – a competition name that rather perfectly encapsulates the entire tournament. After a few strong wins – including a whitewash of Mark Kindgon, a close one against John Mann, and a metaphorical stamp on Steve Hine’s muffin (if you know, you know) – Hogan sealed the title by beating his good friend James Richardson in the final.
Heading into Harlow, Ruthless Richardson was sitting proudly at the top of the rankings – something he made abundantly clear ahead of a recent interview before his recent MODUS Super Series return, and insisted I mention. Which, in fairness, I just did.
Unfortunately for Richardson, he had to settle for runner-up again on Sunday, this time beaten by the Muffin Man himself, Steve Hine, who averaged an impressive 92.47 in a 5-1 win.
All in all, a high-quality weekend of arrows – and the next stop on the tour is somewhere rather appropriately placed: just outside Dartmoor National Park at the start of September. If you’re anywhere near Okehampton, you know where to find them.
