Nijman Defends Zwaantje Masters

Play the Pro Darts Scorer

Local lad Wessel Nijman has been crowned king of the 2025 Zwaantje Masters, defeating compatriot Danny Noppert 3–1 in the final. For Nijman, born in Uitgeest, the venue was practically on his doorstep – a mere 40km spin down the A9. (No, of course I didn’t know it off the top of my head. But local lad feels acceptable give the proximity)

The tournament itself began with seven groups of six players, featuring a sprinkling of recognisable names. Alongside Nijman and Noppert, the line-up boasted former World Championship semi-finalist Scott Williams, the ever-entertaining Devon Petersen – whose dance moves are sometimes more accurate than his doubles – and Andy Hamilton, a former World Championship runner-up best remembered for his love of inflatable hammers. Truly a diverse cast list.

Nijman navigated his group without fuss and then brushed past Petersen, who had one of those days where nothing quite clicks. From there, he faced Williams – the last remaining non-Dutchman – and sent him packing too. At this point, the tournament inexplicably switched from legs to set play. Why? Who knows. I just write about it, I don’t set the rules.

Still, Nijman wasn’t remotely bothered by the change. He reeled in a 96 average to see off Danny van Trijp in straight sets, though both players pushed each other to the wire. That victory set up a mouth-watering final against Noppert – The Freeze – who perhaps didn’t live up to his frosty nickname, thawing just when he needed to be at his coldest.

Nijman, however, stayed red hot, delivering another classy performance to wrap up a 3–1 win. Noppert will no doubt be disappointed, but Wessel won’t care in the slightest – a trophy is a trophy, and this one is yet again, heading back to Uitgeest.

The Zwaantje Masters crown now sits proudly (if only metaphorically) on Nijman’s head for another year, and after this display, few could argue he doesn’t deserve it.
