James Welding and Archie Self took the early lead on Thursday in ending Day One of their respective groups, top, as they look to join Mervyn King in Saturday’s finale at the MODUS Super Series.
Welding, who last appeared at the Super Series back in December last year, made a long-awaited return by taking the early lead in Group C after winning four of his five matches, as he recorded victories against Rowby-John Rodriguez, Trina Gulliver, Martyn Turner and Gary Mawson, with his only defeat coming against Jim Mayer, to sit on 8 points from a possible 10 thus far.
Elsewhere, Martyn Turner and Jim Mayer also ended the day on 8 points each, but sit 2nd and 3rd respectively behind Welding on leg difference, whilst Trina Gulliver sits in 4th on 4 points, Gary Mawson in 5th on 2 points and Rowby-John Rodriguez bottom on 0 points having competed in three of his five scheduled matches after withdrawing on ‘compassionate grounds’.

In Group B, Archie Self took the early lead after completing a clean sweep with four wins from four on Thursday Evening, as he recorded victories against Dean Finn, Tommy Lishman, Johan Geldenhuys and Steven Plumstead, to sit on a maximum 8 points from a possible 8 thus far.
Elsewhere, Tommy Lishman ended the night in 2nd on 6 points, whilst Dean Finn sits in 3rd on 4 points, Johan Geldenhuys in 4th on 2 points and Steven Plumstead bottom on 0 points having suffered four straight defeats.
The MODUS Super Series continues on Friday with players continuing to battle out as they aim to join Mervyn King in Saturday’s finale, with Welding and Self taking the early lead thus far. Group C will commence from 1pm GMT and Group B will commence from 10pm GMT.
