One viral highlight occurred in 2020 when he calmly squashed a fly that landed on the board mid-match and left it there for his opponent – an oddball instance that quickly became darting folklore.

In recent years, Whitlock has shifted focus toward mentoring and exhibition play. Although he lost his Tour Card in 2024, he remains a popular figure on the circuit and in various events. At 56, he’s still respected on stage, and off it, he continues to inspire new talent in Australia – not least via his son Mason, who hit a nine-darter of his own in late 2024.
