Talking Points: Moving Majors?

Play the Pro Darts Scorer

WITH the modernisation of the Winmau World Masters (PDC) for 2025 it may be time to look at the ‘Darts Calendar’ overall. For quite some time the season has been ‘bottom heavy’ with many of the most important events happening over a few autumn/winter weeks.

The final quarter of the year has 3 of the ‘Big 5’ events and two ‘mini majors’. In addition the WDF have repositioned their flagship to avoid a clash with Ally Pally meaning yet another landmark event in the November/December period.

It seems the Player Championship Finals pretty much has to stay where it is as the end of season climax of the Pro Tour and the same is probably true of the European Championships.

The Grand Slam could possibly move but it also has an element that needs certain other events to be completed in order for the field to be filled as the PDC would wish. Although some slight juggling might be available.

The obvious restructure would be to move the World Grand Prix to the end of June and move the non-ranking World Cup to the end of August. Granted qualifying would need to be shortened – or changed to a rolling one for this event only – but the WGP has always been different and deliberately so.

This would mean the 5 biggest ranking majors would be in March, June, July, Oct/Nov and Dec/Jan. The mini majors would also be more spread out with Feb, September and December being featured. Then the two biggest annual Premier events would finish in May and August.

Surely this might make a more sensible season for players, fans and friends alike?
