Shockwaves reverberated around the Oktoberhallen as the final day of the Belgian Darts Open erupted into life with a seismic and wholly unexpected development – reigning champion Luke Littler was dethroned by a superbly composed and technically immaculate Niels Zonneveld.
This should in no way diminish the calibre of the Dutchman’s performance, which was nothing short of exemplary. Rather, it underscores the sheer magnitude of any victory over Littler, particularly on Belgian soil where he has developed an almost habitual affinity for departing with silverware in hand. Such is the aura surrounding The Nuke that any defeat he suffers inevitably carries an element of astonishment.
The contest itself was of the highest possible standard, a curtain raiser befitting a final day of elite competition. Both protagonists operated at an extraordinary level, each averaging north of the ton while collectively producing a dozen maximums in a relentless exhibition of scoring power.

Zonneveld, however, demonstrated remarkable resilience, recovering from an early 3-1 deficit before seizing control in the decisive leg to secure progression and confirm his place in consecutive European Tour Sunday evening sessions. The drama proved far from fleeting.
The next two encounters also traversed the full distance, each brimming with tension and finely balanced exchanges. Danny Noppert completed an opening Dutch double, edging past Ryan Searle in a contest of marginal gains, before Jonny Clayton replicated the feat, narrowly overcoming Ross Smith in another enthralling decider.
With the quarter finals following strict draw order, it will be Noppert and Zonneveld who initiate the evening’s proceedings. Clayton, meanwhile, is set to face home nation qualifier Andy Baetens, who emerged victorious from yet another eleven-leg epic.

The Beast from the East eventually found a breached The Wall, Martin Schindler after a contest defined by persistence, pressure, and finely poised momentum swings.Luke Humphries once again exhibited his clinical authority, producing a dominant and methodically ruthless display to dispatch Jermaine Wattimena.
Having conceded the opening leg, “Cool Hand” accelerated with devastating efficiency, leaving The Machine Gun trailing in his wake. The world number two now renews his amiable yet fiercely competitive rivalry with Chris Dobey, who navigated past a spirited Kim Huybrechts, ensuring that Baetens remains the sole Belgian standard bearer heading into the evening session.
The afternoon concluded with yet more high drama, as both Michael van Gerwen and Ryan Joyce prevailed in nail biting 6-5 victories to set up a compelling quarter final collision. Van Gerwen was pushed to the brink by a resurgent Daryl Gurney, who produced a magnificent 140 checkout to force a deciding leg.
The Dutchman, however, threatened to conclude matters in spectacular fashion, opening the decider with consecutive maximums and briefly flirting with perfection. The nine darter ultimately eluded him, but the crucial leg did not.Joyce’s passage was equally dramatic.
Racing into a commanding 3-0 lead against Cristo Reyes, the Geordie appeared to be in complete control before the Spaniard mounted a spirited and technically impressive comeback, even edging ahead at one stage. Yet Joyce, embodying resilience and composure, regained his footing at precisely the right moment to seal victory.
And so, as the tournament hurtles towards its climax, eight combatants remain standing – among them, a solitary Belgian hope, carrying the aspirations of an expectant home crowd into what promises to be a captivating and high stakes evening of darting theatre.
