Joe Cullen made it a perfect weekend double on Sunday, after a dominant 8-1 victory over Dimitri Van den Bergh in the final of Players Championship 4, to pick up a 10th PDC ranking title of his career, as the second weekend of the 2022 Pro Tour season concluded in Wigan.
Cullen, who defeated Damon Heta in the final of Saturday’s Players Championship 3, came through two last leg shootouts on route to the final, as he recorded victories over Peter Hudson, Luke Woodhouse, Jermaine Wattimena, Keegan Brown, Rob Cross and Gerwyn Price, to set up a clash with Dimitri Van den Bergh.
The final began with Cullen racing into a 2-0 lead, before Van den Bergh halved the deficit in Leg 3 with a 13 dart hold of throw, which turned out to be his only leg won in the decider, as Cullen then rattled off six legs on the spin, which saw him seal the victory with a clinical 127 checkout and a 12-dart break to take the title and go back-to-back in Wigan.
Van den Bergh’s run to a 1st final in 2022 saw him record victories over Luc Peters, Andrew Gilding, Kevin Doets, Adam Gawlas, Daryl Gurney and Krzysztof Ratajski, coming through three last leg shootouts along the way.
Elsewhere, there were Quarter Final runs for PC1 winner Luke Humphries and 6x TV finalist Dave Chisnall, with the likes of 3x World Champion Michael Van Gerwen, Former Grand Slam Champion Jose De Sousa and Premier League Star Michael Smith all suffering early exits.
A small number of players have managed to claim back-to-back titles on the Pro Tour. In addition to a certain Phil Taylor, who did many, new World Seniors Champion Robert Thornton managed it, as did Wez Newton ( who also claimed a Grand Slam Place on the Friday of the same weekend) MVG and Gerwyn Price are also in the ‘B2B’ Club.
The PDC Pro Tour returns on 19-20th March in Barnsley with Players Championship Five & Six taking place, with the 128 players competing for £100,000 in prize money each day, with play beginning at 12:00 GMT. Play will be broadcasted across two streaming boards on PDC.TV and various bookmaker websites worldwide, with all live scores and results on tv.dartconnect.com.
