Van Gerwen Reigns Supreme in Hildesheim

Michael van Gerwen won his 33^rd Euro Tour Title on Sunday as he defeated Rob Cross 8-5 in the final. The win sees the Dutchman return to number three in the world after James Wade’s absence from the tournament.

“Mighty Mike” won in Brighton on Thursday and has continued his run of winning by taking the crown in Germany to take the £25,000 prize and go into Nottingham on Thursday on the back of winning.

World number one and current world champion Peter Wright was van Gerwen’s opponent for the quarter finals, however the Scotsman withdrew from the tournament moments before the quarter final with a back issue. He is in action on Thursday in Nottingham so hopefully theirs a speedy recovery for Wright.

The Dutchman defeated Dimitri van den Bergh in an epic semi-final as both players hit averages of a 100 plus in the match.

The world number nine had darts to reach the final but saw all his darts at double fourteen miss on the outside, allowing van Gerwen to close out the match on double 18 with his first dart finding the target.

The Dutchman averaged 100 plus in three of his four matches across the weekend showcasing the talent that he has shown consistently whilst on the PDC circuit. The Belgian hit three more maximums than the Dutchman but generated three fewer darts at double. The averages showcase this with a slightly higher average of 101.26 for the green machine.

His performance in the final was impressive after coming from 6-5 down to overcome “Voltage”. Like his semi final against van den Bergh, van Gerwen closed the match out on double eighteen once more hitting it on his second dart. MVG was clinical on his doubles throughout the match recording a 50% checkout rate.

Elsewhere, Daryl Gurney brought back the years as he reached the semi finals of the tournament narrowly losing out to Rob Cross. Unlike the others, “Superchin” played a match more than the other semi-finalists after he played Lukas Wenig on Friday.

The Northern Irishman defeated Premier League stars Joe Cullen and Jonny Clayton on his route to the semi-final, including an impressive 164 checkout against the “Ferret”. Gurney also beat Luke Humphries in the last sixteen 6-4 despite “cool hand” only missing three darts at double in the match.

Across the weekend, he beat three players on his route that were ranked higher than him showcasing the ability and threat that he possesses.

Karel Sedlacek was also impressive in Germany across the weekend as he reached the quarter finals of the tournament. He defeated former back-to-back world champion Adrian Lewis in the first round 6-2, swiping aside “Jackpot”

The Czech international continued to impress as he beat Chris Dobey and Jose de Sousa to reach the quarter-finals in Hildesheim. His run came to an end at the hands of Rob Cross but a lot of confidence is surely to be gained by Sedlacek as the pro tour events approach in Barnsley next week.

The darting action continues as the Premier League heads for Nottingham as night 6 of the premier league approaches with van Gerwen looking to continue his winning run on the big stages.
