The 2022 Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts Quarter Finals commence at Aldersley Leisure Village, with a huge, anticipated rematch between World Number 1 Gerwyn Price and 2012 Grand Slam champion Raymond van Barneveld on Friday night.
The pair met on Sunday afternoon in their second match of group stage action after both won their opening Group A matches. Barney claimed a last-leg decider win despite averaging five points lower than the Welshman but found the ability on the outer ring, missing just four darts.
The Red Dragon star has since won a winner takes all battle with Dave Chisnall to finish as the runner-up in the group behind the legendary Dutchman. Price then battled back to beat tournament number 8, and UK Open champion, Danny Noppert 10-8 in the Last 16, including a fantastic 164 finish to break the throw and level the game.
Van Barneveld defeated Simon Whitlock in the opening knockout game of this year’s Grand Slam, claiming a 10-8 win and showcasing his fantastic darting experience in battling from 5-2 behind. The Wizard from Aus struggled to deal with the Dutchman who again thrived on the outer ring, this time missing just eight darts at double over the eighteen legs played.
The Quarter Final will be first to 16 legs and Welshman Price is the current defending champion, so the challenge of facing a man he has already lost to won’t affect his mentality. Those who doubt the World No.1 may do well to recall that the Iceman has never lost a knockout game in this venue and has lifted the trophy on every visit.
Masters champion Joe Cullen opens the Quarter Final action against Michael Smith on Friday, in another rematch from the groups. Bully Boy won 5-1 win when the pair met on Sunday afternoon to top Group C ahead of the Rockstar, having won his remaining group game against Ritchie Edhouse on Monday.
The Winmau man impressed in beating Group D winner Dirk van Duijvenbode in the Last 16, winning 10-4 and including two ton-plus checkouts of 104 and 129 to break the Aubergenius twice and put him well in command.
