Matt Clark and Raymond Smith took the early lead on Thursday in ending Day 1 of their respective groups, top, as they look to join Jim McEwan in Saturday’s Champions Week finale at the Modus Super Series.
Clark, who entered Champions Week having won Week 10 earlier in the year, won four matches from five to take the early lead in Group C, as he recorded victories over John Henderson, Justin Smith, Martin Adams and Scott Walters, with his only defeat coming against Colin Osborne.
Elsewhere, three players in Justin Smith, Colin Osborne and Scott Walters ended the day 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively on 6 points each, whilst John Henderson and Martin Adams ended joint bottom on 2 points each.
Darts World ambassador Osborne has had a mixed Champions week so far. The former UK Open finalist opened with a superb 4 from 5 days on Monday and looked in a strong position to contend for Wednesday’s qualifying place. However, two patchy days saw him miss out and slip into Group C.
The 47-year-old Derby-based thrower regrouped strongly to again start his group well and hold a qualifying place as we go into the final day of the group stage.
In Group B, Raymond Smith took the early lead, with the Aussie winning three matches from four, as he recorded victories over Alexander Merkx, Johnny Haines and Jamie Kelling, with his only defeat coming against Adam Mould.
Elsewhere, Alexander Merkx also ended the night on 6 points, but sits in 2nd on leg difference, whilst Adam Mould sits in 3rd on 4 points, with Jamie Kelling and Johnny Haines sitting 4th and 5th on 2 points each.
Modus Super Series continues on Friday with players continuing to battle out as they aim to join Jim McEwan in Saturday’s Champions Week finale, with Clark and R Smith taking the early lead thus far. Group C will commence from 9:30am GMT and Group B will commence from 10pm GMT. Play will be streamed live on The Modus YouTube channel, Sporty Stuff TV or via various bookmaker’ websites worldwide.
