Mission Gamble on Nijman’s Redemption Story

Red Dragon Darts

Mission darts have appeared to target a very specific type of player for their playing squad. Young often non UK and already proven to be winners seems to be the rough template. They have complied with this once more with their latest signing, although not without comment and controversy.

Wessell Nijman returned to competive darts last month after a suspension handed down for his involvement in match fixing. The Dutchman, a former two time Development Tour winner, was punished following the scandal within an online tournament during COVID and was subsequently banned for five years, including two and a half years of probation.

Social media replies showed their displeasure at Mission signing Nijman, as these past sins continue to dog him. However, it would be wise to remember the exampe of other sports and the mitigating factors that were at play.

The COVID pandemic had isolated many people including dart player and it is certainly possibly that those involved behaved differently from how they would in normal cirumstances. It is also highly likely that influence was exerted by others who stood to gain from the activity.

Not unlike the case of Mohammed Amir, in cricket, it seems that the authorities and now Mission have decided that a mistake , however serious, made at such a young age should not permanantly destroy a life and career.

Darts has a long tradition of offering its players a path out of difficulty and a shot at redemption. From Eric Bristow and Chris Mason who had troubled spells in their younger years through to Adam Smith Neale who provoked controversy when regaining his tour card recently.

Even Ryan Searle managed to stir the ire of those keen to condemn – in a different way, when he misdeclared a double as in,- a few years ago.

But the long and short is that Wessell has served his time and obeyed the conditios set for his return. Mission have obviously decided that short term outrage could be offset by the talent and the tale of forgiveness and redemption that may be produced by the Dutchman

Former Target player Nijman was spotted at recent Dutch NDB tournaments wearing a Mission patch offering a clue to the signing before the announcement . The 22 year old will be able to return to the PDC circuit, should he wish to, from next year’s Q-School onward.
