Twice world champion Adrian Lewis has announced he is to take an indeterminate break from professional darts.
‘Jackpot’ won back-to-back world titles at Alexandra Palace in 2011 and 2012 and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the World.
The 38-year-old, a European and UK Open winner as well as the first player to throw a nine-dart finish in a World Championship final. last played in a European Tour qualifier in March.
Earlier today the popular character tweeted:
“Dear all, in particular my fans, I feel that your loyalty deserves an explanation for my absence from tournaments.
After 20+ years I feel I need a break from the professional circuit for now. Massive thanks for the support from my fans and sponsors.”
Lewis broke through to the top level whilst still in his teens and has been competing on the elite PDC Pro Tour for two decades. Many regard Staffordshire thrower as one of the most naturally gifted ever to play the sport although this belies the effort of practising with the legendary Phil Taylor for many hours during his formative years.
The Stoke-on-Tent star went on to thank the PDC and the Professional Darts Players Association for the opportunities and assistance they have given him.
It remains to be seen if the curtain will be drawn down on an illustrious career permanently or whether a period of rest, and perhaps focus on other things, will rekindle Jackpot’s desire for more tungsten success.
