The ‘surprise’ victory of Andrew Gilding in March’s UK Open perfectly juxtaposed the ‘inevitable’ wins of Michael Smith in previous major events. Our game produces fairy stories in any shape or form that you may wish for.

The PDC’s annual touring flagship returned to its London home for the 2023 finals last week, but it was Dutchman Michael van Gerwen who retained possession of the trophy. The Green machine overcame a rejuvenated Iceman Gerwyn Price who has rebounded in style after his audition for Skullcandy’s latest model back in December.

The darting tours, whether they be amateur or professional, are now in full swing. Major event qualifications for the remainder of the 2023 season are brewing already and our ‘On Tour’ sections keep a weather eye on them.

The rapid progress of the women’s game can be seen in the increasing numbers playing Womens Series and the regular stream of ‘firsts’ a first Womens (PDC) 9-darter and wins for Welsh and Irish players for example.

The UKDA Season is heading to an exciting climax with the final rounds of matches, in the top divisions, imminent. Champions, promotions and relegation have already been settled in the lower divisions and an extensive set of Match results and reaction is included later in this issue to reflect a strong second season.

The trio of top draw interviews inside features a noteworthy conversation with Leonard Gates. The insights from Gerwyn Price on his new found popularity were a positive reaction to JR Lott’s piece in DWE 9 and Nick Rolls expansion on the WDF’s current discussions and decisions is surely worth any amateur player’s attention.

Sadly, the period between print publications has once again seen a number of ‘darts people’ passing on. Lakeside owner Bob Potter became a true champion of darts and stuck with us when many were jumping ship. Patrick Chaplin offers fuller memories within these pages.
