Noppert Freezes Out The Wall

Red Dragon Darts

Last year’s semi-finalist Danny Noppert defeated Martin Schindler 10-8 in an expectedly close encounter at the Betfred World Matchplay on Sunday.

Noppie nearly gained an early advantage, wiring the double 18 for a 153 out and the instant adoration of the Blackpool fans. Schindler however cleared up on the very same target.

A hold followed for the Dutchman, before another opportunity for a break and a ton-plus checkout went amiss.

Schindler was doing well to stick with the high-scoring Noppert, who withstood double wobbles to hold throw himself and level at 2-2.

Unfortunately for the German, his usually iron-clad defence didn’t continue into the last leg of the session as he conceded throw to a 115.

A break of throw from Schindler returned parity, before a succession of missed doubles plagued both leaving Noppert to claw back the lead at 4-3.

More confident darts returned for last year’s UK Open winner, who took out the next leg in 15 darts. Heavier scoring helped the gap to grow between Noppie and Schindler, making his second appearance in the competition.

By the break, the distance between the pair would be 4 legs, Noppert beginning to slightly ease towards the next round.

A hold of throw which Sky’s Mark Webster described as ‘drama-free’ would help Schindler into the next stanza, but he just wasn’t offering enough. 7-4 became 8-4.

The next leg did go Martin’s way, with a 104 out to boot. One dart at double 16 arrived in leg 14, and it looked like curtains were coming for the German. Noppie’s inaccuracy ensured the contest would tighten further.

The match continued to the same pattern, with more opportunities arising for Schindler and once again them being taken. A fourth consecutive leg for the German looked on the cards before a 112 out saved Noppert’s skin.

A further leg followed for Schindler, looking far more the part than he did in the early stages. But ultimately early frustrations proved to work against him, and a tops would be enough for Danny and a 10-8 win.

“It is a really nice place and the crowd is nice, the venue is nice and the people are nice, and I won!”: Danny said to Darts World after the match.
