Wizards Wizdom: DW 584

Red Dragon Darts

Well it would be fair to say it’s been a season of highs and lows, darts really doesn’t change does it? It seems, however, that the ’Wizard’s Wizdom’ I offered myself at the end of my last column had the desired effect.

My first trip to the MODUS Super Series over the summer resulted in qualification for another Champions week. Unusually, I played in a later group and started horribly. One bonus about such an awful start is you know exactly what you have to do on the final day. Three wins from four, and all against those above me, ensured I made it through to finals night.

Now, I may have had a poor first night but between you, me and the gatepost I knew I had some good stuff in me. My one win on Thursday had been a very nice display, against Adam Lipscombe , in which much of what I have been working on in private came through.

Now I cannot claim that everything was smooth as silk on finals night but I state quite happily that I did exactly what was needed and when it was. Edging out Peter Hudson early on was awkward as we have known and competed against each other a very long time. Then it was time to get the measure of the in form Cristian Kist.

Although CK did me 4-2 I was happy enough to progress to the semi-finals and have another go later!

This time there was no messing around. When a player is in such good form they get used to rolling people over and you have to rise to it quickly and let them know they will not have it their own way. A twelve dart leg with a maximum and a 136 finish will do, as will a 4-2 win.

CK maintained his great form, won a Challenge Tour and was narrowly pipped in the final of a Pro Tour event only weeks later!

Champions week was another hit and miss affair. Once again I timed my efforts well but did not fire on all cylinders. Despite making the final again, I was handily bested by the phenom that is Luke Littler.

It’s good to be back in the mix and, having set some goals and plans for the next few years, the work has already begun again.
