On The Oche: Darts World 584

Red Dragon Darts

I’m sure you will agree it’s been a phenomenal summer of tungsten titillation. Since DW signed off on our previous issue there has been a plethora of action from every corner of the darting globe, each code and all levels. It truly is astounding the speed at which our sport has developed in recent years.

‘On camera’ the PDC World Cup was swapped to an all pairs format and produced a very popular tournament as a result. Wales’s victory and a fine run from the hosts added to the fanfare.

Nathan Aspinal bagged one of the game’s biggest crowns with his World Matchplay triumph. A hugely popular, and almost home, win saw The Asp complete his bounceback after a worrying wrist injury and a battle to recapture his best.

The third of this year ‘Big 5’ ranking events – within the PDC – saw Luke Humphries triumph in the annual double-start anomaly that throws up shocks and drama in equal measure. Cool Hand’s win was more of a long awaited validation than a genuine shock.

Away from the camera’s glare, both the elite and the tier tours have been busier than ever before at this time of year. Over 50 main tier/tour events were held under the PDC’s auspices. The standard was exceptional and stories abounded. Whether Womens, Development, Challenge or Pro Tours the action has been riveting.

The amateur codes’ valuable contribution is still rebuilding and re-shaping itself in the post-pandemic environment. The ADC in the UK and NDB in the Netherlands seem to be taking charge of their own destiny in terms of the amateur game.

The WDF are either going along in partnership or concentrating on their flagships of the Lakeside and International /Team events; their affiliated events still stretch across the globe. The storied World Masters has been postponed once again whilst this re-balancing shakes itself through.

The heirs to the County game, UKDA, are into their third season and are seemingly well settled and on a stable footing. We look forward to seeing any development that comes forth and continue to admire the efficient and well managed conduct of such an important part of our game’s historic infrastructure.

Within these pages you will find news and reviews from all the above and much more besides…
