Shaggy Goes Dark

Red Dragon Darts

HAVING owned the original silver Scott Williams Target darts since launch, I was very interested to see how the black edition compared. A player on the rise after an impressive showing at the 2024 PDC World Championship, Williams is now well known by darts fans thanks to his unique and bright attire, rivalled only by Peter Wright.

  • Product: Darts (Steel Tip)
  • Brand: Target
  • Model: Scott Williams (Black)
  • Variation: 23g (also in 25g)
  • Dimensions: 43.5mm x 8.44mm (widest)
  • Material: 90% Tungsten
  • Price: £65.95

Shaggy seems very much a “love him or hate him” player, and this appears to be reflected in the darts he uses, catering to a specific, but perhaps growing, niche within the darts market.

Initial Impressions:

The darts are bomb shaped, and bombs they are. Even with a light throw, the darts hurl themselves at the board with a lot of pace and power. For those that have a light, looping throw, these might be an option if you’re looking for a bit more ‘conviction’ in your game.

The darts feature a deep cut razor grip as the focal point, where the majority of players will hold the dart from – Scott is no exception. The grip feels very aggressive to hold, more so than with the silver version.

Specifications:

Available in 23g and 25g with Swiss Points, the silver and black barrels share identical dimensions. The 23g are 8mm in diameter, while the 25g are 8.4mm. Both barrels share a length of 43.5mm, and arrive with a short yellow Target Pro Grip shaft, and No. 2 Target Scott Williams flight. The soft-tip are only available in 20g, and have a diameter of 7.6mm, and a shortened length of 40.5mm.

Set Up:

Just as Scott himself uses, you’ll definitely want to pair these with longer Swiss-Points. The 26mm points supplied with the darts simply bury themselves in the board, leaving very little room for negotiation. The longer points (I recommend the DS Swiss Points) will offer more space in the treble, and with any luck, will naturally improve your scoring.

Despite thinner rings towards the front and rear of the barrel, as well as longitudinal grooves on front rings, they are designed to offer little in the way of an actual grip, instead more acting as a back-up/touch feature, so that if you misjudge the grip when picking the dart up to throw, it won’t feel alien, and you’ll still have some support while releasing the dart.

The biggest plus for me was the ease in which to find the grip, throw after throw. With the bulbous barrel shape, I found my fingers instinctively finding the razor grip time after time, which was exactly what I’d hoped for.

Summary:

All in all, these are a dart to be used by some very specific kind of players. If you prefer an aggressive central grip on a bomb shaped barrel, these very well might be ‘the ones’.
