Shane McGuirk produced a superb performance and corirmed his spot in the Last 16 of the Men’s World Championship, defeating Sweden’s Edwin Torbjornsson 3-0.
Edwin Torbjornsson was the third seed to fall in 24 hrs as the WDF World Championship continued in the Men’s and Women’s events at the Lakeside, Surrey.
‘The Arrow’ kicked off proceedings with an 87 checkout and that was a sign of things to come, with the Irishman not missing a single dart at a double in the entire game.
McGuirk (main picture) took the first two sets 3-0 and continued his relentless display by opening the third set with a 14-darter.
Torbjornsson stopped the rot with finishes of 107 and 80 but couldn’t deny McGuirk a meeting with either Brandon Weening or Jun Matsuda, the Irishman taking out 111 and 98 to advance in style.
McGuirk, who averaged a new tournament-high of 96.16, will return on Wednesday evening.
Beeton Beats Kirk
James Beeton was the last man to get into the Men’s WDF World Championships but he was a winner on debut against Bradley Kirk.
‘Beets’ fired in a 180 in the opening leg of the match and took the first set 3-2, pinging in a 100 finish and sealing it with a 15-darter.
Kirk, who came back to the tour earlier this year, found his feet in the second set, taking it 3-0 after successive finishes of 87 and 83.
Beeton delighted his supporters in the third set, opening up with legs in 15 and 14 darts before converting his fourth match dart to win it 2-1.
The 21-year-old, who averaged 85.34, will return on Tuesday afternoon against Switzerland’s Thomas Junghans.
Ouchi rides the wave into the second round
Japan’s Mayumi Ouchi was a winner on the Lakeside stage at the second time of asking, defeating Lorraine Hyde 2-1 in the first round of the Women’s World Championship.
Ouchi is a more methodical player and her stylings proved more effective in the opening set, taking it 3-1 with successive finishes of 69 and 70.
Hyde was 2-1 down in the second set but found her range to force a decider, starring with finishes of 60 and 115.
The Scot was unable to convert further chances in the third set, Ouchi taking it 3-0 to win 2-1 and book a Last 16 tie with second seed Aileen de Graaf.
Gijbels denies Luke in last-leg decider
Sybren Gijbels continued the good run for Belgians in this WDF Lakeside World Championships, defeating Kevin Luke 2-1 in the opening game of the afternoon.
America’s Luke took the opening set, punishing some uneven scoring from the debuting Gijbels to win it 3-1.
Gijbels found his rhythm in the second though, throwing the first of four 180s as he won the opening leg in 11 darts and ultimately took the set 3-1.
The third set went all the way, with Gijbels surviving a match dart from his American opponent before taking out 40 to take it 2-1 with an 80.31 average.
Murphy marches past Jacklin
Paula Murphy was a quarter-finalist last year at Lakeside and she’s now one step closer to repeating that feat after beating Paula Jacklin 2-0.
The experienced American swept the board in the first set, winning it 3-0, and promptly found herself 2-0 up in the second.
England’s Jacklin did get on the board in the third leg of the second set but was unable to make further inroads, with Murphy sealing the deal with a 21-dart leg.
