Midlands Winter Leagues Reaching Climax

SEVERAL West Midlands Winter Leagues are reaching their final weeks and it’s crunch time for titles and promotion/regulation issues.

The Sheldon and District Winter League has now been brought to a close as the final outstanding fixtures have all been played. Champions of the premier league are Langley Arrows who won fifteen of their scheduled sixteen games, their thirty points giving them a two point’s advantage of runners-up Sheldon Marlborough Arrows. Winners of the shadow league were Banbury Club whose ten points were two more than their nearest rivals Dingle.

Brian’s Flights won the division one title with a total of thirty points, again it was by just two points as Willclare Sports and Social finished as runners-up with twenty-eight points. The shadow league went to Bell Inn but it was very close as runners-up Hollywood Social Club ended with the same eight points as Bell and were just two legs of average behind them.

Winners of division two were Sheldon Marlborough Ridge, their twenty-two points were two more than second placed Hornet. Sheldon Marlborough Flights were clear-cut shadow league winners as their twelve points were double that of second and third placed Moseley Rugby Club and Raven.

The Kings Norton League had their Section Cup on the fixture card and in the top section games currently placed third in the league Bournebrook beat league leaders Copper Fox 11-10 with R.Chambers notching a maximum for the winners and E.Simpson having a 160 break for the losers. Second in the league Northfield had a 13-8 win over fourth in the league Thurlestone.

The games in the middle section saw Bourneville beat Stirchley 12-9 while Cock Inn were awarded an 11-0 walkover against Coppice.

There was just the one game in the bottom section in which Kings Norton Flights lost 14-7 to Perfection.

Game nine results in the Camp Hill League had no effect on the league table whatsoever as leaders Wakefield Warriors with a maximum for their James Hinkley handed out a 7-0 whitewash to their hosts next to bottom of the league Sedgemere Devils to make it nine games undefeated fixtures for the league leaders. Second placed Cotterills Lane EBAHA Club are two points short of the leaders after they added a 5-2 home win over Clumsy Swan to their tally, Neil Parsonage recording a 160 break for the winners.

It was the final week of fixtures for the Four Oaks and District League and with division one leaders Beehive having completed their fixture list and having already confirmed themselves as champions Bishop Vesey completed their campaign with a 6-3 home win over The Nomads and finished as runners-up on the same twenty-two points as Beehive but trailing by four legs of average. Beggars Bush finished on the wrong side of a 6-3 scoreline in their home tie with third placed Highcroft Hotdogs however their Alan Whitehouse was in top form with a score of 180, a break of 110 and a finish of 109.

A final 5-4 home defeat at the hands of the Rise Club team cost Walmley CSC Flights the title in division two as they ended up as runner-up with eighteen points two fewer than Heartlands whose last game of the season 6-3 win over Charley’s Flights gave them the title.

Pint Pot Flights title win in division three as been on the cards for many weeks, their final 6-3 win at Sutton Sports giving them a total of twenty-six points for the season which was four more than runners-up Deer’s Leap who ended their campaign with a 5-4 home win over St Thomas Arrows who took third place with twenty points.

Old Liberal Club took their unbeaten run to twenty games in the Stourbridge and District Monday Night League in style by handing their visitors Seven Stars a 7-0 whitewash. The win keeps Old Liberal Club four points to the good on second placed Gate Hangs Well ‘B’ who had a vital 5-2 win away against Princess who lose third place and drop to fourth on the same thirty-two points as Five Ways whose 7-0 win at Fox Inn (Lye) saw them replace Princess in third place. Both Five Ways and Princess are eight points off the top of the table.

It’s Old Liberal Club again that top the Netherton Thursday Night League, their latest fixture seeing them win 8-1 away to fifth in the league Hill and Cakemore Ex Serviceman’s Club to keep them three points ahead, plus with a game in hand on their nearest rivals Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club ‘A’ who went one better with a 9-0 success at bottom of the table Olde Queens Head who are still seeking their first win after twenty-one games.

There were no fewer than eight maximums scored this week G.Moreton (Old Liberal Club) not only hitting a 180 but also recording a 160 break. Other maximums came from J.Brookes (Spring Meadow Social), S.Fellows (Netherton Sports and Social), D.Stanton (Hill and Cakemore Ex Serviceman’s Club), B.Watts, D.Edwards (Old Liberal Club), S.Homer (Old Glasshouse) and J.Southall (Plough and Harrow).

The latest round of the League Cup in the Silver End Sunday Morning League produced quite a few shock results none more so than the 5-3 defeat for league leaders Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club who went down at eighth in the league Old Liberal Club. Second in the league Dudley Sports ‘A’ also made their exit as they lost 6-2 at home to High Acres ‘C’ who are just five places off the foot of the table. In the other games played Rose and Crown won 6-2 at Brier Rose and Tenth Lock won their home game with Mount Pleasant 5-3.

In the Shadow Cup fifth in the league Church Tavern went down 5-3 playing away against next to bottom of the table Pensnett Liberal Club, 5-3 also the score by which High Acres ‘B’ defeated Raven. Top scorers for the round were High Acres ‘A’ who had an 8-0 win over Three Crowns ‘A’ and not far behind were Old Star who won 7-1 against Three Crowns ‘B’.

Although Albion suffered their thirteenth defeat in fourteen games in the Hilltop Friendly Tuesday Night League they moved off the foot of the table. Losing 4-3 at Cottage Spring was enough to move them up to next to bottom of the table as Horseley Tavern ‘B’ lost 6-1 at Sow and Pigs to drop into the bottom spot just one leg of average worse off than Albion. At the other end of the league table Vine ‘A’ made it fourteen straight wins when they won 6-1 against local rivals Vine ‘B’ keeping them six points ahead of second and third placed Allen’s Bar and Tamebridge, Allen’s winning 4-3 at Horseley Tavern ‘A’ while Tamebridge suffered a 4-3 home defeat losing to fourth in the league Three Horseshoes who are now just two points short of their hosts.

Due to Old Liberal Club having a bye this week in the Stourbridge and District Wednesday Night League they have dropped from pole position to third place with ten points from six games. Taking over at the top of the table is Fox Inn (Lye), their 4-3 home win over Beech Tree Miners giving them twelve points from seven games, however hot on their heels is second placed Five Ways ‘A’, their 4-3 win at Bird in Hand ‘E’ putting them on the same twelve points as the leaders but from an unbeaten six games, their game in hand on the Fox Inn (Lye) could see them replace them at the top of the table.

A 7-2 win at Gornal Labour Club confirms Netherton Sports and Social Club as champions of the Sedgley and Gornal Tuesday Night League with one more fixture to play. With forty points the leaders have four more than Gornal British Legion whose 5-4 win at Old Bulls Head guarantees them the runners-up spot as they in turn have a four points advantage over third, fourth and fifth placed Gornal Labour Club, Baggeridge and Old Bulls Head who all have thirty-two points.

No change in the top four places of the West Midlands Ladies Super League despite leader Gemma Barrett losing 3-1 to Tara Simmons-Fullwood as she has forty-four points from seventeen games and a lead of seven over second placed Jackie Trott who didn’t play this week and now has four games in hand on the leader. Third in the league Jacqueline Maiden added a 3-1 win over Jodie Rowlands to her account to put her on the same thirty-seven points as Trott but from fourteen games. Maiden has a three points lead, plus a game in hand on fourth in the table Shellbie Simmons who had a 3-0 win over Julie Emery.

Kings Head ‘A’ continue to head the table in the West Midlands Men’s Super League, their latest 4-1 home win over Corpus Christi giving them a four points advantage over their nearest rivals Dog and Partridge who went down 3-2 away to third in the league Dudley Ex Serviceman’s Club who are now only one point behind their opponents. Gilbert’s Bar ‘B’ beat Junction ‘A’ 4-1 to hold on to fourth place, they are a further one point behind and six off the top.

After only the second fixture in the Black Country Men’s Super League just four of the starting line-up of thirteen teams are undefeated. Current leaders are Townsend ‘A’ who had a convincing 5-0 win over local rivals Townsend Social Club to give them ten points. Allen’s Bar won 4-1 at home against Blackheath Liberal Club to leave them two points off the top as are third in the league Quarry Bank Liberal Club ‘B’ who had a 4-1 home win over Halesowen Cricket Club. Making up the top four is Northfield Darts Club they have seven points after their 3-2 home success against Pensnett Liberal Club ‘A’.

It’s as you were for the top eight players in the Amblecote Premier League with Dan Nicholls leading the way with 241 points from 43 games and Jamie Barrowman second with 230 from 44 games. Third and fourth placed Nick Fullwell and Reece Colley are both on 225 points, Fullwell having played the same 43 games as Nicholls while Colley has one game in hand on the leader.

Scott Baker leads division one of the Gilbert’s Bar Monday Night Singles League with 147 points from 20 games and although he has played two games more than second and third placed Dean Simmons-Fullwood and Ian Stanton he has respective leads of 19 and 22 points over them.

Division two leader Kurt Wright with 15 wins and one draw from his sixteen games has 134 points and a 20 points lead, plus a game in hand on second placed Alan Melling who in turn is one point ahead of third placed Allan Davies, Melling also having a game in hand on Davies.

Dave Thackeray tops division three, his 165 points is eighteen more than Joe Bartolo who is second and has played one game more than Thackeray. Third in the division Thomas Hollowood is on the same 147 points as Bartolo and has played the same 19 games.

A 7-0 win Wednesfield Legion has seen Junction ‘B’ hold on to pole position in the singles division of the Wolverhampton Tuesday Night League with a seven legs of average advantage over their nearest rivals Hotshots. Hotshots, like Junction ‘B’ made it seven straight wins with their similar 7-0 victory at home against Gilbert’s Bar ‘B’. The top two teams the only ones to have won all seven games so far in the singles division.

There is a similar situation in the doubles division with Junction ‘B’ and Hotshots first and second and being the only two teams not to have lost so far, Junction ‘B’ have a two legs of average lead on Hotshots.
