Shaggy Speaks Up: Williams On Greaves, Gurney and Grandstanding

Play the Pro Darts Scorer

Scott Williams isn’t one for sugar-coating. Ask him about Beau Greaves, the future of darts, or even which players you’d least like to meet in a car park after midnight, and you’ll get the unfiltered truth. So TalkSPORT recently did just that!

On Beau, Williams’ admiration is obvious – though he’s quick to point out the only obstacle that matters.

“Beau is different in every sense of the darts world – she is unbelievable. But until she believes, she hasn’t got a chance in hell. That’s the mental side of the game.”

Greaves is already running riot in the women’s game, hoovering up titles like loose change down the sofa, but Williams insists her next big step is whether she wants to make the men’s circuit her home.

“She is still not quite sure whether she wants to play against men professionally or carry on playing the women’s game. She knows the men’s game makes her better.”

To illustrate, he recalls her clash with Josh Rock:

“She had a game against Josh Rock a few months ago on the ProTour where it went all the way to 5-5 and then she went out in 11 darts in the last leg. That shows how much of a good player she is if she wants it.”

For Williams, the conclusion is simple.

“She is the best female player in the world. She is probably one of the best players in the world on her day. She just has to give herself the confidence and the want to do it and I think she will be absolutely fine.”

But darts talk with Williams rarely stays polite for long. Mention hardest men in darts and his eyes light up.

“If you look at a darts player that’s a non-Tour Card holder I would say someone like Boris Krcmar. In general hardness Rob Cross is surprisingly hard. Gezzy obviously knows what he is doing. He is probably technically good at fighting. Rob is like a little scratter. He’s slapping handbags about and if you need just a general scrap.

Then a couple of the big Dutch lads they are absolute monsters. All of the Dutch lads especially people like Danny van Trijp – like all of their hands seem to be 50 percent bigger than mine. Daryl Gurney, I don’t think so – he is an absolute wetwipe, love you Daryl.”

That blend of bluntness and banter is classic Shaggy. From forklift shifts in a warehouse to the semi-finals of the World Championship, Williams has lived the underdog story he compares to Eddie the Eagle.

“Yeah! Just because he should have never got to where he got. I am just a random council house kid who just got good at this pub game because I like beers.”

For Williams, it’s simple: darts should be entertainment first, trophies second.
“When I am on TV and I go to the exhibitions and do stuff you get to see the more real me. That is because I enjoy it that much, I love the stage and absolutely love people. I am a working-class person, so they have paid their money to go there and see some entertainment, and I want to entertain by chucking some decent darts.”

Raw honesty, a pint in hand, and a cheeky dig at Daryl Gurney – the world according to Scott Williams.
