Cullen Claims Hildesheim Crown.

Joe Cullen picked up his second PDC title of the year on Wednesday, after defeating Gerwyn Price 8-7 in the final of Players Championship 27, as the midweek Pro Tour double header concluded in Hildeshiem.

Cullen, the winner of PC5 back in March, went all the way once again as he reached the final firstly by recording victories against Brendan Dolan, Adam Hunt, Cameron Menzies, Robert Grundy, James Hurrell and Scott Williams, to set up a clash with Price.

The final began with Cullen racing into a 2-0 lead with winning legs coming in 12 and 16 darts respectively before Price hit back by winning back-to-back legs in a total of 23 darts to square the tie up at 2apiece.

Cullen then moved in front once again in the following leg with a 16 darter, before there was a run of six straight breaks of throw between the pair ending with Price holding throw in Leg 12 with a 15 darter to make it 6apiece and a best of three contest.

The pair then held throw for the following two legs to set up a 15th and deciding leg in which Cullen would have the advantage of throwing first. This proved to be decisive as ‘The Rockstar’ sealed the victory with a 20 darter to pick up a ninth Players Championship title and a 13th PDC senior title of his career.

Price, the winner of Tuesday’s PC26, narrowly missed out on winning back-to-back titles with ‘The Iceman’ recording victories on the day against Tavis Dudeney, Stephen Burton, Jeffrey De Graaf, Sebastian Bialecki, Michael Unterbucher and Danny Noppert, before being denied by Cullen.

Elsewhere, there were Quarter Final runs for Dutch duo Richard Veenstra and Alexander Merkx, whilst the likes of World Number One Luke Humphries, 2x World Champion Gary Anderson and Former World Matchplay Champion Nathan Aspinall were amongst the high profile first round casualties.

The PDC Pro Tour returns on 30th September to 2nd October in Leicester with Players Championship 28 & 30 taking place, with the 128 players competing for £125,000 in prize money each day.
