December saw the Birmingham Festival of Darts staged at the Weoley Castle Working Men’s Club, with men’s and ladies events played on both Saturday and Sunday.
Organiser Stephen “Spag” Pasetti is saying this could well be his very last Weekend of Darts in Birmingham at the Weoley Castle Working Men’s Club and for now is having a break from darts, but he does go on to say “Maybe I’ll be back bigger and better”.
Let us hope Stephen changes his mind and continues with the sterling work he does for the Birmingham area and for our sport of darts for which he attracts players from throughout the country.
Saturday’s Men’s Classic title and the top prize of £100 went to Tyler Thorpe who won the final against Warwickshire’s Nigel Heydon 6-3, Heydon receiving £500. There was £200 for the losing semi-finalists Adam Warner and Steve Meek, with the losing quarter-finalists Tom Lonsdale, Martin Tonks, Reece Colley and Johnny Haines each receiving £100.
Lee Evans, Damon Heta, Ryan O’Connor, Simon Gascoyne, Dan Hands, Sam Jackson, Tom Bissell and Wayne Jones all made their exits in the last sixteen and pocked up £55.
Last year’s runner-up in the Ladies Classic was Vicky Pruim but this year she went one better and won the event beating Sara Walton with a straight 5-0 result to clinch the first prize of £530 with Walton collecting £240.
Warwickshire provided the two losing semi-finalists, Macy Gibbons losing 5-1 to Walton while Natalie Gilbert lost 5-2 to Pruim, the two losers receiving £130 each. Losing out in the quarter finals were Tracey Dean, Jane Downey, Angela Kirkwood and Lisa Ashton who all received £50.
Sunday saw the ladies and men’s opens, in the former, for the second day running Sara Walton finished as runner-up, this time losing 6-4 to champion Lisa Ashton who won the top prize of £400 with Walton adding £200 to the previous day’s winnings of £240 to make it a very profitable weekend.
Making their exits in the semi-finals were Rebecca Hoyland and Vicky Pruim, Hoyland losing 5-0 to Ashton and Pruim going out 5-4 to Walton whom she beat 5-0 the previous day in the Classic final.
The two losing in the semis received £100 each and there was £50 for the losing quarter-finalists Sarah Triner, Natalie Gilbert, Lyn Marsden and Sophie Hadley.
The Men’s Open final was a close and hard fought affair with Warwickshire’s Dom Taylor finishing on the right side of the 6-4 result against Johnny Haines (pictured) to pick up the winners £840 with Haines collecting £400.
The last four games saw Taylor win 6-1 against Taylor McGuckian and Haines beat Tom Lonsdale 6-3, the two losers receiving £150 each.
There was £100 for the players going out in the last eight, Lee Evans, Ash Marson, Luke Woodhouse and Ryan Palmer with players who reached the last sixteen each picking up £40.
