Reigning World Champion Luke Littler arrives in Brighton for the next stop on the 2026 Premier League roadshow, and The Nuke does so as the league leader, with one foot seemingly already planted on the path to The O2 next month.
Last season, this particular venue on the south coast of England proved a happy hunting ground for the teenage sensation. Although, at this stage in his illustrious yet still embryonic career, the same could be said for most arenas.
Littler defeated Nathan Aspinall on that occasion. This time around, he opens his Brighton campaign against another Englishman – and one he appears to relish facing – Stephen Bunting.
If accolades were awarded for producing colossal averages and still somehow contriving to lose, The Bullet’s trophy cabinet would be overflowing. The pair have clashed seven times in Premier League competition, with the Liverpudlian prevailing on just one occasion – a last-leg decider in Rotterdam, it should be noted, in Bunting’s defence.
This will mark the third meeting between the English duo during the current campaign, with the previous two encounters both going the way of the youngster by identical 6-3 scorelines.
If the former Lakeside Champion harbours genuine aspirations of reaching the play-offs, he can ill afford to leave too many points behind across the seven remaining weeks.
Opening up the evening’s proceedings, it is the current Premier League champion Luke Humphries facing Jonny Clayton. The Welshman – despite being tipped by bookmakers for the wooden spoon at the outset of the competition – surged to the summit in the early stages. However, three consecutive quarter-final exits, two of which came at the hands of bottom-placed Josh Rock, have seen The Ferret relinquish top spot to Littler. Nevertheless, Clayton remains well-positioned to remain firmly in contention for London.
For Humphries, this now feels like a pivotal juncture. Arriving in Brighton, Cool Hand sits just two points adrift of the top four, so there is no immediate cause for alarm. And while Jonny Clayton is unquestionably a formidable opponent, the timing of this encounter may not be entirely unfavourable.
Northern Ireland ace Josh Rock has finally rid himself of that dreaded zero-point burden, courtesy of breaking his duck a fortnight ago against Clayton.
He then reinforced that breakthrough with another victory in Manchester last time out. Now, he faces the other decorated Welshman in the field – Gerwyn Price – as he looks to complete something of a Cymru quarter-final hattrick.
The statistics lean firmly in favour of The Iceman, who emerged victorious in their only previous meeting of this year’s campaign – an emphatic whitewash in Dublin that Rock will no doubt still recall.
While it remains possible, if somewhat improbable, that the Antrim arrow-smith could force his way into the play-offs, Price – currently second on leg difference behind his Ferret-nicknamed compatriot – looks well placed to secure qualification.
The last quarter-final sees an all-Dutch encounter between Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen. The pair contested the opening final of the campaign in Newcastle, with The Green Machine emerging victorious. They were scheduled to meet again in Ireland, but Van Veen withdrew through illness, leaving that Tyneside clash as their sole encounter thus far.
Just a single point separates the Dutch duo heading into their Brighton showdown, and at present, many observers – alongside Humphries – would suggest this trio are vying for perhaps one remaining play-off berth. With several weeks still to play, however, there is ample scope for further twists and recalibrations.
Once the action in East Sussex draws to a close, only six stops will remain on the schedule. Points will become increasingly precious, and a handful of results either way over the coming fortnight could dramatically reshape the complexion of the league table.
