Phil Taylor has been there, seen it and done it all it all in our sport of darts, his views and thoughts are often inciteful and not filtered in the same way some others seem to be. His recent discussion of current players and trends, on Double Tops podcast sponsored by BetMGM, was no exception.
The 16-time world champion also discussed a couple of BetMGM Premier League players in Michael van Gerwen and Luke Humphries – and feels both will struggle to win with the regularity they have in their careers so far.

“I think Gerwyn Price is the second best in the world at the moment,” he said. “Luke [Humphries] is obviously struggling a bit, and his confidence has taken a bit of a hit, but he just needs to get back on the practice board.
“Luke is a brilliant player. He reminds me a bit of Mark Selby in snooker – he’s a real grinder. I suppose he’s a bit like Raymond [van Barneveld] because you never feel truly comfortable against him even if you’re say 200 points ahead. He’s always got that ton-plus finish in the locker, which plays on your mind.
“Michael (Van Gerwen) has had big changes in his life and a lot of the stuff he now has to do as a single parent he hasn’t done in the past.

“When he was at the top he was one-track minded and practised religiously. He nearly did everything right and I think his lifestyle has changed a little bit and that’s probably been reflected in his results over the last couple of years.
“Whether he’ll be the sort of player he was back when I was playing I’m not sure. I look at Michael and it’s a bit the same with Humphries: there’s no doubt they’ll win tournaments but I don’t think they’ll win them as regularly as they did.
“Both are getting older and the game is moving on – it’s just the way it is.”
