Hall Plays Through Pain to Retain ADC Winmau Championship

A slipped disc wasn’t going to stop Graham Hall. The defending champion retained the ADC Winmau Championship in Portsmouth, beating Jack Main 6-3 in the final to keep hold of the crystal darts trophy for a second year running and take home the £3,000 first prize.

It was the culmination of a season of 24 events across the Amateur Darts Circuit’s North and South divisions, with the top eight from each heading to the MODUS Live Lounge for a 16-player showdown.

‘G-Man’ arrived as the fourth qualifier from the South, entering as somewhat of an outsider, with plenty to defend after beating Kurt Parry in a last-leg decider twelve months ago.

Day one was full of storylines. Steve Lennon, the former PDC Tour Card holder who won three North titles this season, was the class act of the last 16, averaging over 97 in a 5-2 win over Willie Borland.

Second seed Callum Francis was given a huge scare by Roger Crook who missed match darts for a 5-3 and 5-4 win, and 16-year-old Lewis Cook beat David Sumner 5-2 to set up a last-eight meeting with Hall. Hall himself was battling through the pain, hitting five of 11 doubles in a 5-2 win over Ashley Coleman.

On Sunday, the champion found the big finishes when he needed them. Cook came from 4-1 down and missed three darts to force a decider, only for Hall to take out 114 and win 5-3 without missing a double.

Ryan Hogarth, who beat top seed Danny Ayres in the quarter-finals, came back from 5-2 down in the semi-final, but Hall’s 118 checkout stopped the comeback and sealed a 6-4 win.

Main, the North’s Event Ten winner, who had knocked out Francis, was waiting in the final. It was level at 3-3, but back-to-back ton-plus finishes of 105 and 100 took the title out of his reach. Hall claimed the title on double, 16, the same as his victory last year.

A year ago, Hall needed three last-leg deciders to win the title. This time, with a slipped disc to contend with, he won all four matches without one.
