German Darts Championship: Wright Withdraws as Sedlacek Impresses

Red Dragon Darts

Peter Wright was forced to withdraw from the German Darts Championship following a superb win in round 3. The World Champion cites a back injury as cause for his absence from the quarter final.

Karel Sedlacek continued his brilliant form in the as he defeated Jose de Sousa 6-4 in the third round. Sedlacek beat Adrian Lewis and Chris Dobey in the previous rounds and has now taken the world number seven out, as he missed four darts at double the whole match ending with a 60% checkout rate.

The Czech star will face Rob Cross in the quarter finals tonight after the former world champion beat Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-3 in the match before. He included a 99 checkout in knocking out the Dutchman and averaged just shy of a ton.

Michael van Gerwen safely made it through to the quarter finals in the opening match of the day as he beat Martin Lukeman 6-4. The Dutchman knew of the threat of the Englishman after Lukeman beat Damon Heta yesterday, with Heta averaging 108 but losing 6-5 in the process.

The former three-time champ did not hit the same level as he did against Jose Justicia yesterday but managed to overcome Lukeman with a 95.13 average.
Van Gerwen will face Peter Wright* in a mouth-watering quarter final after the Scotsman beat Krzysztof Ratajski 6-4 in the second game of the day.

The finishing from the pair was at the highest level with only seven missed darts at double in the entire game from both combined.

(MVG receives a Bye as Wright withdraws with injury).

Daryl Gurney made the quarter finals after beating the “rockstar” Joe Cullen in a 6-3 victory for the Northern Irishman. Cullen recorded the higher average of the two, but his doubling let him down in Germany with the Englishman missing seven darts at double. Gurney threw more maximums than his opponent and averaged 94.98 to set up a quarter final clash with Jonny Clayton.

Elsewhere, Dimitri van den Bergh and Michael Smith made the quarter finals with Smith averaging an impressive 108.38 in beating Dave Chisnall 6-1. Van den Bergh beat Ryan Searle by the same score line as Smith, with the two set to face each other in the quarter finals.
