Suzuki and Richardson advance as Scutt’s run ended by Burt on Day 2 at Lakeside
The WDF World Championships continued at the Lakeside on Sunday with many in first round action for the first time in this year’s competition. Defending ladies champion Mikuru Suzuki was amongst the winners at Lakeside on day 2 as she defeated Laura Turner 2-0 in the penultimate game of the evening session.
“Miracle” Mikuru has impressed during the MODUS online live leagues and continued her good form at Lakeside proving too good for Turner. Suzuki came through a deciding leg in the second set as she comfortably beat the Byfleet star 3-0 in the first set.
Suzuki’s win sees her defence continue and her next match will be against fourth seed Aileen de Graaf, with the Japanese star still yet to lose a match on the Lakeside stage.
James Richardson came through a difficult tie in the last match of the night beating Poland’s Sebastian Steyer 2-1, with “Ruthless” winning the first five legs of the match before losing the second set to his opponent.
Richardson made his debut on the Lakeside stage after making four appearances at the Alexandra Palace and looked to be settling in just fine, blowing Steyer away in the first set including a maximum in his second visit to the oche.
Steyer pushed the Englishman though digging deep to win three must win legs to send the match into a deciding set, hitting double ten after Richardson missed a dart at double eight to take out a 133 checkout.
“Ruthless” came through the deciding set and goes through to face fellow countryman and tenth seed Scott Marsh in the second round.
PDC tour card holder and one of the tournament favourites Connor Scutt was knocked out in straight sets at the hands of Canada’s Shawn Burt on day two, as the Englishman lost in front of his home fans at Lakeside.
Scutt has impressed on the PDC circuit having reached the semi finals of Pro Tour event 3 in Wigan but could not find his top form as Shawn Burt produced one of the shocks of the tournament so far.
“The Sniper” looked in good form as he hit a maximum in the first set but lost his ability on the doubles allowing Burt to take full advantage. The Canadians win sees him through to face second seed Thibault Tricole in the next round.
Dave Parletti produced a blind 180 in the opening match of the evening session at Lakeside as he beat Shaun McDonald 2-1 to advance and face Belgium’s Andy Baetens.
McDonald was in superb form in the opening set averaging close to 90 in winning the opening set but “The Punisher” was certainly punished as Parletti found some form of his own in closing out the match with some heavy scoring as he knocked the Scotsman out.
Both were in excellent form and the Lakeside crowd were certainly entertained to some quality arrows from both, after Parletti returned to action after suffering from illness.
The afternoon session saw an all-Fleetwood affair as Lee Shewan faced Jordan Brooks with Shewan winning a last set decider and prevailing a 2-1 winner.
Brooks raced out the blocks on the Lakeside stage taking a 2-0 lead in the opening set, however lost his scoring power completely allowing “The Cobbler” to take full advantage. Slack darts from “The Sheriff” resulted in the first set going the way of Shewan.
Jordan Brooks like the first set found his form once more in the second set, again racing into a 2-0 lead as he found the ability on the doubles to send the match into a deciding set.
Shewan looked the more relaxed of the two and this showed in the deciding set, with “The Cobbler” showing no nerves on stage to become the first Fleetwood born darting star to win on the Lakeside stage going through to face defending champion Wayne Warren in the second round.
Tori Kewish set up a second-round match with number one seed Deta Hedman in the ladies’ tournament after beating good mate Lorraine Hyde 2-0 in the third match of the afternoon session.
Kewish looked the more confident on stage treating the Lakeside crowd to a maximum as she raced into a one set lead over her opponent.
Lorraine Hyde came back in the second set finding some form to send the second set into a deciding leg, before Kewish closed out the match and set up a match with Hedman in round 2.
There were also wins for Steve Hine, Ryan de Vreede, Ian Jones and John Desremaux on day 2, with de Vreede knocking out the first Italian to play on the Lakeside stage in Francesco Raschini 2-1 in the afternoon session.
“Antwerp Lightning” Vicky Pruim defeated Desi Mercer from New Zealand 2-0 to face eighth seed Lorraine Winstanley whilst Veronika Ihasz whitewashed Paula Murphy 2-0 (6-0 leg score) in the other matches in the ladies’ competition on day 2, with Hungarian Ihasz going through to face one of the tournament favourites Beau Greaves in the second round.
Action from Day 3 continues on Monday with the afternoon session as the second-round action gets underway.
