Pugs Goes From Strength to Strength on ADC’s Open Tour

Chris Wickenden returned to the winner’s circle in the Winmau Open Series, securing a second place at the MODUS Super Series after winning Event 9 at Middlesbrough Sports Village.

Adam Mould also produced his second win in the Open Series competitions after winning Event 12, whilst former Super Series weekly winner Scott Taylor and Rhys Griffin won events 10 and 11. 

Lisa Ashton continued her impressive run in the LP Metal Detecting Women’s Championship Tour, winning all four events in Middlesbrough to lead the Championship Tour table with 42pts, 13 ahead of the WDF Girls World Champion Eleanor Cairns. 

Darts World Magazine’s Amateur Award winner Wickenden earnt the first 256pts on offer in Middlesbrough after beating Tom Cromwell 6-2 in the Final of Event 9, moving up to 2nd in the ADC Rankings with 692pts, 47 points clear of 3rd placed Tony Wood. 

Pugs included a 96 checkout in the 7th leg before clinching the tournament in the next to secure his trip to Portsmouth. Chris included victories over Jack Vincent in the Semi Finals and Jim McEwan in the Last 64, producing a first 9 dart average of 99.89. 

Rhys Griffin claimed his first Winmau Open Series victory of the year after winning the 2nd tournament on the Saturday, beating Jordan Matthews 6-4 in the Final including the only maximum in the match. The 26-year-old Welshman defeated Andrew Hyland 4-1 in the Quarter Finals, before clinching a 5-1 win over Geoff Murray with a 114 checkout in the 4th leg and 2 180s. 

Lisa Ashton defeated Natalie Gilbert 5-1 in the Event 5 Final including a 150 checkout in the opening leg, before beating Jane Robson 5-2 in the Final of Event 6 with a 14 darter in the 3rd leg after checking out 95 in 2. 

Scott Taylor will return to the MODUS Live Lounge after he picked up the opening tournament victory on the Sunday in Middlesbrough, after beating Mark Graham 6-4 in the Final including a first 9 dart average of 106.97.

The Bolton born player defeated home favourite and Winmau Open Series 1 finalist Colin Osborne 5-3 in the Semi Finals, whilst AJ Urmston-Toft saw his run in Event 11 come to an end against the Butcher in the other Semi Final matchup at Middlesbrough Sports Village. 

ADC Number 1 Adam Mould claimed his 2nd Winmau Open Series event of the year, after beating Richie Parkin 6-4 in the Final and wrapping up victory with a 76 checkout to break the throw. Mouldy leads the ADC Rankings by a considerable margin with 1206pts to his name, putting the 35-year-old 514 points clear of 2nd placed Chris Wickenden in the rankings. 

All four winners will head to the Depot in Cardiff for the Red Dragon Champion of Champions Finals Day, set to take place on the 26thof August in the Welsh capital.

Lisa Ashton repeated the trick on Sunday after claiming Women’s Championship Tour’s 7 and 8 at Middlesbrough Sports Village, whitewashing Lorraine Hyde 5-0 in the Final of Event 7 with a first 9 dart average of 102.20 as both players hit a maximum each. 

The Lancashire Rose wrapped up what was a fantastic weekend in the Northeast, beating last year’s WDF Ladies World Championship Finalist Kirsty Hutchinson 5-3 in the Final of Event 8.

Kirsty provided the toughest test for Ashton in her Final matches including the only 180 of the match but was broken crucially in the 8th and Final leg. 

The Final 4 Winmau Open Series Events will head to Bristol on the 12th and 13thof August for the Final 4 competitions of the year at Wellsway Sports Centre, with the last 4 LP Metal Detecting Women’s Championship Tour Events also taking place as 4 more spots at the MODUS Super Series are on offer.
