Talking Points: Amateur Hour?

Diamond Draws Competitions

There are perhaps two main themes of amateur darts, one could perhaps be described by the terms development, pathways and transitions. Included under this banner might be academies and youth systems leading to the more formal routes to the higher levels of our game.

The other theme could be described with the terms standalone, entertainment and social. It can stretch from highly organised team organisations such as UKDA right through to darts themed nights out for birthdays and other occasions and social venues such as Flightclub.

The pathways and development theme of our game seem in fine shape and have developed, very swiftly, into a reliably production line for top level talent and a solid structure to allow individual progress and the many who have contributed deserve much credit.

There is a problem for those who enjoy the WDF system. It seems to be becoming more European centered which can lead to the tour being not worth playing if early events do not go your way. There may be a need to adjust qualifiers and or major venues?

However, darts has always been as much of an enjoyable pastime and sociable activity as it has been a professional endeavour. It would be a shame if the social and collective parts of the game were cut adrift or priced out of the reach of many.

The loss of tens of thousands of pubs was very worrying for the game. But, it seems we have survived and even thrived via a huge boost to the elite game and the progress of equipment to play at home or in the garage etc.
