Bullseye Maths: Darts Makes a Difference For Leeds Primary Schools

Diamond Draws Competitions

Children at two south Leeds primary schools enjoyed maths lessons with a difference on Wednesday to celebrate the return of Premier League Darts to the city.

Thursday will see a sell-out 11,000 crowd cheer on the likes of Luke Littler and Luke Humphries at the First Direct Arena, as darts’ top stars make their annual visit to Leeds.

However, the event has been preceded with two special sessions of Bullseye Maths, in association with Vanquis – giving students the chance to experience the PDC’s popular numeracy scheme.

DARTS DOING GOOD: DartsWorld’s Dedicated Area For Darts Social and Charity Activity

Bullseye Maths sees pupils using darts-based games to engage with numeracy in a fun and interactive way, and was delivered by the PDC and Junior Darts Corporation to students at Rothwell Victoria and Sharp Lane primary schools on Wednesday.

“All the children who took part were great and really got involved with the Bullseye Maths sessions,” said Gary Horsley, the JDC Director of Education who led the activities.

“Bullseye Maths has been so well received around the country in recent years and we’re keen to showcase how darts can help people of all ages to be comfortable with numeracy.

“Darts is probably the sport which uses the greatest amount of maths, and Bullseye Maths uses that alongside the fun aspect of playing the game.”

Miss Houlden, the Year 5/6 Senior Teacher at Rothwell Victoria Junior School, said: “This was a great 90 minutes of learning – such an inspiring lesson.

“The children loved it and were engaged from the go, and it was nice to see such high engagement from all the children. Who knew maths could be so fun.”

Miss Houlden’s colleague Miss R added: “This was a great session for Year 4 – we usually get overlooked for external sessions due to the complexity of learners but today was such a refreshing change.

“Thank you for inspiring our youngsters with teamwork and communication while playing darts. We all really enjoyed it.”

Miss Jones, Year 5 teacher at Sharp Lane, said: “This was a great 90 minutes and every child is now buzzing after such a positive session.

“We really did not know what to expect but from the first minute all children were fully engaged and focused on both the darts and maths activities.

“Most of the staff came down the corridors to see the action and we can’t wait to do more darts education. I am now inspired to do the JDC’s ABC Darts Tutor training course and get darts into the school.

“The way the children made progress in the session was superb and the buzz in the room was a delight to see and hear!”
