Scotland’s latest World Cup representative, Cameron Menzies delivered one of the most imperious and technically exquisite performances of the opening round at the 2026 Baltic Sea Darts Open on Friday evening.
Dimitri Van den Bergh marked his long-awaited return to European Tour competition with a statement victory in Kiel.
The opening day of action at the MERKUR Ostseehalle produced a succession of compelling encounters, yet it was Menzies who emerged as the most eye-catching performer, producing a display of extraordinary scoring potency and clinical finishing to overcome former World Champion Rob Cross 6-4.
In a contest distinguished by its exceptional standard and sustained intensity, the Scotsman averaged a remarkable 108.41, struck six maximums and produced a sensational 170 checkout as he secured what could ultimately prove to be a hugely consequential victory in the race to qualify for July’s World Matchplay.
With both players currently engaged in a fiercely contested battle for one of the coveted Blackpool berths, the significance of the result extended well beyond progression to the second round.
However, despite Cross demonstrating encouraging signs of a return to form and repeatedly threatening to wrestle control of the contest, Menzies maintained his composure superbly throughout.
The 35-year-old consistently generated scoring pressure through a barrage of heavy visits, forcing Cross to operate at an exceptionally high standard merely to remain competitive. It was a performance characterised by conviction, confidence and relentless scoring authority.
“I’ll be honest, I felt really good in that game,” admitted Menzies following his victory. The Scot, who now advances to face Stephen Bunting in the second round, also acknowledged the quality of his opponent’s display.
“Rob is coming back and he pushed me, but that’s the best game I’ve played in a long time, and I needed that win.”
Elsewhere, Dimitri Van den Bergh ensured his return to the European Tour stage concluded in emphatic fashion as he overturned an early deficit to dispatch another Scot, Alan Soutar. Competing in his first European Tour event for 420 days, the Belgian initially found himself trailing 2-0 before producing a remarkable transformation in fortunes.
What followed was a sustained spell of dominance as Van den Bergh reeled off six consecutive legs to complete a convincing 6-2 triumph. The former World Matchplay champion displayed impressive resilience and competitive sharpness throughout the contest, gradually increasing the intensity of his scoring before ultimately overwhelming Soutar with a sequence of authoritative legs.
The victory sets up one of the most intriguing second-round encounters of the weekend, with Van den Bergh scheduled to meet Dutch number one Gian van Veen on Saturday evening in what promises to be a contest of considerable quality.
“I am working so hard behind the scenes,” declared the Belgian after securing his passage into the last 32.
Following a prolonged absence from the European Tour circuit, Van den Bergh’s successful return represents an encouraging indication that the former major champion remains determined to re-establish himself amongst the sport’s elite competitors.
With Menzies producing arguably the performance of the opening day and Van den Bergh announcing his return in emphatic fashion, the opening chapter of the Baltic Sea Darts Open provided a captivating introduction to a weekend that already appears rich with intrigue, quality and consequence.
