James Wade on World Series Call Ups: ‘Better Than Barnsley and Wigan’

Diamond Draws Competitions

James Wade has reflected upon the mixed blessings of his long-awaited return to the World Series of Darts stage, admitting that whilst the opportunity has been immensely gratifying, it has also highlighted the loneliness that can accompany life on the professional circuit.

Following an absence of more than four years, the ten-time major champion has earned recalls for the World Series events in Copenhagen, the United States, New Zealand and Australia. His re-emergence on the global stage has been thoroughly merited, having pieced together one of the most impressive periods of consistency of his recent career.

Back-to-back appearances in major finals at the UK Open, coupled with a runner-up finish at the World Matchplay and two Players Championship titles across the last two seasons, have elevated the world number six back into contention amongst the sport’s leading lights.

Nevertheless, the Aldershot veteran revealed that travelling without a companion has provided one significant drawback. Speaking to Oche180, The Machine had this to say:

“It’s magical, right? I would say it is a damn sight better than Barnsley and Wigan. I am having a good time.

“I would say the only negative I am having is that I am doing the World Series on my own without a companion, so it is tricky and quite hard work.

“It is quite lonesome. After 25 years of doing it, it is quite sad that nobody is sharing the experience with me. I am still happy and grateful to be here.”

The 42-year-old is also determined to savour the forthcoming Australian leg alongside lifelong friend Lee, whilst making time for a few pursuits away from the oche.

“ I don’t think some of the dart players realise how lucky they are to be selected. Some of it is quite repetitive and a natural progression for the PDC to select them. For people like myself, it is quite a privileged position.

“I am looking forward to it. I am going to make sure I get a sea-fishing trip in there. I am going to eat loads of seafood.

Looking ahead, ‘The Machine’ remains convinced that further televised success lies within his grasp.

“I would like to win a TV tournament to be fair. I had three runner-ups in the last 12 months. I know I still have the game in me and I am still good enough to win titles.”
