There’s something fitting about John Henderson securing his place at Finals Night in Portsmouth by beating Steve Beaton along the way, two players who’ve been doing this for a very long time going toe-to-toe in Group A at the MODUS Super Series, with Hendo coming out on top this time.
Henderson made light work of a genuinely experienced Group A field in Portsmouth, coming out on top with 11 wins from a possible 15. Jack Smith, Adam Hunt, Jurgen Nuijten and Danny Van Trijp all beaten along the way. But it was the win over Beaton that carried the extra dimension.
Two tungsten Champions sharing a stage on a Monday afternoon of Super Series group play is exactly the kind of thing that makes this format such a superb watch, and Henderson made sure it was his name at the top of the group.
It’s the latest reminder of what a career Henderson’s really is. The Scot completed a rare treble on the World Seniors circuit in 2024, lifting the World Seniors Darts Championship, Matchplay and Masters in the same year, a clean sweep that will remain unmatched.
Add his 2021 World Cup of Darts triumph alongside Peter Wright for Scotland, and Henderson’s case as one of the most decorated players never to have made it a fixture at the very top of the PDC ranks writes itself.
None of that has made him complacent about the weekly grind of the Super Series. ‘The Highlander’s’ enthusiasm to keep turning up in Portsmouth, week after week, against fields that mix rising talent with fellow circuit veterans, says plenty about why he remains so well regarded around the tour amd especially by live audoences.
Beating Beaton, a 1996 World Champion in his own right and still a difficult night’s work for anyone at 62, was as good a way as any to underline it.
