The ADC Winmau Championship North reaches its climax this weekend, and young starlet Lewis Cook added a North title to the South version he won earlier in the year by taking Event Nine in Middlesbrough.
‘The Laser’ saw off Jamie Stoddart to start his day, and then averaged over 91 in a final-leg win against Joe Heywood, before knocking Jamie Owens out in another match that went the distance.
A 98.86 average put Cook into the last eight in yet another last-leg thriller against Ryan Branley, and he clocked over 91 to eliminate Kevin Lane, 5-3. Cook would make the title match with a 5-2 win against Andy Harland.
Willie Borland would oppose Cook in the final, with the Scot needing two deciders to make the last 32, with wins against Jacob Cooksey, Dayne Fairbairn and Danny Trueman, before he thrashed Scott Winder 5-1 to move into the quarter finals.
There, he nearly let a 4-0 lead slip against Lewis Pride, but found a 68 finish to book a last four spot, with Jordan Matthews his victim as Borland won 5-2 to set up a clash with Cook.
It was a tight final that ebbed and flowed, and in the end it was a fantastic 14-darter that won it for Cook, as he banked the £1,000 first prize.
He was joined in title-winning company by Jack Main, who caught the eye with a series of fine displays in taking the Event Ten spoils at the Sports Village at the expense of Jamie Owens.
Wins against Ciaran Forde and Evander Stevenson got Main started, and after a 4-2 win against Davie Kirwan, an average of nearly 85 accounted for Ryan Branley in a 5-1 success.
That moved Main into the last eight, where he came within a dart of a perfect leg, missing double 12 to achieve the nine-darter, and he then had to stave off a comeback from 4-1 down by Danny Trueman as he emerged a 5-4 winner.
Main fought off another recovery in the last four, where Graham Usher averaged over 99, but it wasn’t enough as Main came through in another deciding leg.
Owens seemed like he was on a surge for the title, dropping just two legs in wins over Scott Young, Harvey Troy and Steven Johnstone, and after downing Daniel Ayres 5-3, he averaged 103.62 in a fine 5-2 victory over James Buckby.
Owens produced again to make the final, an average north of 94 sealing a 5-3 win against Ryan Hogarth, who had enjoyed success at last weekends Welsh Open.
The final was a high-quality affair, with finishes of 111 and 80 aiding Main in taking a 4-2 advantage, and a 15-darter eventually confirmed his win, as he ended with a 98.24 average to Owens’ 95.76.
Daniel Ayres and Steve Lennon didn’t make a significant dent this time around, but still stand clear in the standings at one and two respectively, clear of Lewis Pride in third.
Main’s win catapults him up to fifth, ahead of Lewis Cook, with David Sumner sitting above that pair in fourth. Scottish trio Willie Borland, Ryan Hogarth and Danny Trueman occupy the next spots.
The top four in the standings take ADC Global Championship berths, but with Steve Lennon already assured of his place through ADC Ireland, the top five are likely to take their places.
Placings one to eight will qualify for the Tour Finals.
The Tour comes to a close on Sunday, with Events 11 and 12 up for grabs.
