DARTSWORLD mourns the passing of Stefan Lord, one of Sweden’s finest and most influential players, who died in October 2026 at the age of 71 after a period of illness.

Born in Stockholm on 4 December 1954, Lord emerged as a trailblazer for Scandinavian darts during the sport’s golden era of the 1970s and 1980s.

At just 18 he co-founded Stockholm Super Dart Club (SSDC), an institution that remains central to Swedish darts to this day. He would go on to claim an extraordinary 13 Swedish national singles titles, three WDF Europe Cup pairs gold medals (1980, 1982 and 1988), and numerous other open titles including the Denmark Open (1977) and Swedish Open (1983).

On the international stage, Lord carved a permanent place in the history books. He remains the first — and still the only — overseas player to win the prestigious News of the World Darts Championship, lifting the famous title in 1978 (defeating John Coward) and again in 1980 (against Dave Whitcombe). These victories marked him as one of only a handful of players to win the tournament more than once.

Lord competed in ten BDO World Darts Championships. He reached the semi-finals of the inaugural event in 1978, falling to John Lowe, and achieved his best finish in 1982 when he secured third place after a victory over Bobby George.

The Swede also advanced to the semi-finals of the Winmau World Masters in 1981 and was runner-up at the 1983 North American Open. His final World Championship appearance came in 1988.

Tributes have poured in from across the darts community. Three-time world champion John Lowe, a long-time friend and former opponent, wrote:

“My good friend for many years Stefan Lord passed away yesterday. He was a Swedish pioneer for the sport of darts, probably the most well-known player in the country… We always had plenty to talk about when we met, which was in many countries around the world. Stefan made his final home in Pattaya, Thailand. Thanks for the many memories Stefan, your friend John.”

His beloved SSDC remembered him with deep affection:

“A legend has left us. For us at SSDC, Stefan was so much more than a fantastic darts player. Since the club’s founding he has been a natural part of our community… Stefan was Sweden’s greatest darts player of all time.”

Club chairman Richard Hagel and others recalled a man of enduring curiosity, drive and generosity — someone who remained closely connected to the Swedish scene long after relocating abroad, always eager to follow matches and support the next generation.

“Stefan Lord leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond silverware. He elevated Swedish darts onto the world stage, inspired countless players in his homeland, and earned the respect and friendship of the sport’s greatest names. A true pioneer, a formidable competitor, and a warm ambassador for the game, he will be remembered with gratitude and affection wherever darts is played…”

The thoughts of the entire darts family are with his partner, family, friends and the Swedish darts community at this sad time.

Rest in peace, Stefan.
