Ilagan Reaches Double Figures on Asian Tour

Alexis Toylo captured his fifth PDC Asian Tour title of 2024 at the weekend, as Ryusei Azemoto and Lourence Ilagan added to their respective hauls in Malaysia.

The Royale Chulan Hotel in Penang played host to the year’s fourth Asian Tour treble-header on May 18-19, as 122 players battled it out across an action-packed weekend.

Toylo arrived in Malaysia with a sizeable cushion at the top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit, and he extended that lead with a superb showing on Saturday, following up a run to the Event Ten final with Event 11 success later in the day.

The 32-year-old averaged 99 to defeat former PDC Asian Championship runner-up Paolo Nebrida in the Event 11 showpiece, having also impressed in his semi-final thumping of Jia Xing Phung.

Toylo – who will represent Philippines at next month’s World Cup of Darts alongside PDC Tour Card Holder Christian Perez – dumped out Hong Kong’s Royden Lam in the last 32, before closing out consecutive 4-2 wins against Norisame Wahab and An Sheng Lu.

However, Ilagan kicked off the weekend’s play with his first title of 2024, denying Toylo in a one-sided final to celebrate the tenth PDC Asian Tour title of his career.

The eight-time World Championship qualifier ran out a 5-2 winner against his fellow Filipino, after sweeping aside Teng-Lieh Pupo by the same scoreline in the last four.

The 46-year-old also produced the performance of the weekend in his third-round whitewash of Japan’s Yoshihisa Baba, reeling off legs of 14, 14, 14 and 13 darts to prevail with a 109.31 average.

Japanese star Azemoto then rounded off the weekend’s treble-header with Event 12 victory on Sunday, whitewashing World Championship qualifier Reynaldo Rivera to clinch his third Asian Tour title of 2024.

Azemoto also saw off the challenge of Ilagan in the semi-finals, having fought back from 3-1 down to topple Toylo in the last 16.

Toylo boasts a $5,850 lead at the top of the Order of Merit at the halfway point of the season, with Azemoto occupying second spot, above Nebrida and Ilagan respectively.

The next weekend of the 2024 PDC Asian Tour will take place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from June 8-9, with coverage from Events 13-15 set to be broadcast on PDCTV from the last 16 onwards.
