VARIETY certainly seems to add spice to oche life in 2024. Although one party has certainly generated and gained much of the media attention, when it comes to title and trophy lifting has there ever been such a diverse time in tungsten tussling?
Luke Littler’s Premier League victory, in a fabulous night at London’s O2, capped off an incredible 6 months for him and his family. This year’s event was a mixture of fabulous debuts, heartbreak for Nathan Aspinall and torrid times for Wright and Price.
A player from outside the top echelon won the UK Open, ten different names have won the ten Players Championship events staged and 6 from 7 on the Euro tour as well.
Meanwhile multiple names are keeping Beau Greaves from dominating the Women’s Series as both the Challenge and Development tours throw up new names as well as ‘stalwart’ winners.
The aforementioned Greaves is busy adding more ‘firsts’ to her already extensive list, most recently her exploits in the MODUS Super Series and Champions Week and she leads the female game into a new era.
The ADC and its newly rebadged Women’s branch are also producing amateur darts of the highest standard and feeding new names, Andrew Davidson being the latest, through to the MODUS Super Series as well as boosting their confidence for the other global tours.
The WDF’s announcement of the return of the World Masters is to be welcomed. Darts is booming in what used to be called Eastern Europe and previous events in Hungary have attracted a superb crowd and unrivalled atmospheres. It is to be hoped that the move will see, in time, one of the game’s prestigious events restored to former glories.
Whilst there is a huge amount of positive energy in and around darts, much is bubbling under the surface as elite, professional darts and all its connected infrastructure continues to stretch itself into a new era.
