Littler Storms To Victory at Premier League Darts Night 12 in Liverpool

Diamond Draws Competitions

It was Mersey paradise for the reigning darts World Champion, Luke Littler, as he claimed his fourth nightly Premier League trophy of the campaign, courtesy of a pristine, near-flawless performance in the final to deny Jonny Clayton a third consecutive triumph.

Given The Nuke’s well-documented allegiance to Manchester United, it perhaps wasn’t the victor Liverpudlians had hoped to witness – at least not those of a red persuasion – but it was the one they were ultimately served, with Littler now all but assured of his place at the O2.

On St George’s Day, Littler swept imperiously past fellow Englishman Luke Humphries in a contest that, in truth, might have seen Cool Hand prevail had he been more clinical on the outer ring. Doubling has become something of an Achilles heel of late for the reigning Premier League champion, and once again it proved his undoing, leaving him with significant ground to make up if he is to successfully defend his crown next month.

Awaiting the Warringtonian in the semi-final was Michael van Gerwen, fresh from halting Josh Rock’s impressive run of four successive opening-round victories. Against the youngster, MVG burst from the blocks in incendiary fashion, while Littler struggled to generate any meaningful scoring rhythm. Trailing 3–2, the teenager went into full Snakebite mode – opting for a change of darts – before immediately unleashing a maximum. From that moment on, Van Gerwen maintained his lofty standard, while his opponent began to surge into life with increasing intensity.

After a series of exchanges that saw both players trading breaks of throw, the enthralling contest was ultimately decided in a final-leg decider, which The Nuke held his nerve to claim.

Despite nine 180s and moments of clinical brilliance on the outer ring, it was undoubtedly the best Van Gerwen has produced on a Thursday night this year, making the defeat all the more frustrating. That said, when the World Champion was presented with opportunities at a double, he proved ruthlessly efficient, missing just a single attempt throughout the match.

The Ferret sealed his O2 qualification with another accomplished run, adding three more points to his already impressive tally. Even the most complex of cipher machines would likely confirm Clayton’s presence at Finals Night – and after this Liverpool outing, it feels all but inevitable.

Up against home favourite Stephen Bunting, the Welshman survived a match dart before edging past the Scouser in a finely poised encounter. It was a curious affair, with every leg going with the throw; however, Clayton’s success in winning the bull backstage and throwing first ultimately proved decisive.

Earlier in the evening, hopes of an all-Welsh semi-final had been extinguished when Gian van Veen delivered himself the perfect birthday present, returning to form with a composed victory over Gerwyn Price to secure two crucial points.

Against Clayton in the semi-final, the young Dutchman came agonisingly close to dispatching both Cymru representatives, only to see a dart at the bull drift narrowly low. Clayton duly capitalised, booking his place in a third successive nightly final.

However, within five minutes of the showpiece clash, any aspirations of a Clayton hat-trick began to fade as Littler exploded from the blocks, racing into a commanding 3–0 lead. Moments later, the teenager, operating at a blistering tempo, found himself just a leg away from victory. Even when Jonny managed to claim a solitary consolation leg, it never felt like anything more than that.

With four weeks remaining in the league phase, Clayton sits at the summit on 32 points, with Littler three behind and holding a commanding ten-point cushion over third-placed Gerwyn Price. Just one step behind The Iceman comes Van Gerwen, occupying the final play-off berth, now four points clear of closest challenger Gian van Veen.

For Rock and Bunting, a trip to London in May appears increasingly improbable, though not entirely out of reach – particularly for The Bullet. However, as things stand, Clayton and Littler are assumed confirmed for Finals Night, leaving Price, MVG, Cool Hand, and Van Veen locked in a compelling battle for the remaining two coveted spots. Good luck predicting how that one unfolds.
