Bunting Shines in Sheffield

Diamond Draws Competitions

Stephen Bunting produced a scintillating display in Sheffield to secure his second nightly Premier League Darts victory of the campaign, overcoming reigning champion Luke Humphries in the final to claim the £10,000 bonus prize.

Much of the pre-evening discussion centred upon which player would ultimately avoid a semi-final encounter with Luke Littler at the O2 Arena – a narrative that perhaps underestimated the credentials of Jonny Clayton, who may yet have the opportunity to deliver the ultimate response on Finals Night.

Ultimately, it was also confirmed that Gerwyn Price would be the man tasked with facing Littler in London next week following another compelling evening of action in the Steel City.

With the vast majority of league placings already mathematically settled prior to the evening’s play, the atmosphere carried a more relaxed complexion, allowing the competitors to perform with greater freedom and expression.

The principal area of intrigue revolved around the battle for third position in the table between Price and Humphries, while Littler and Clayton had already cemented their status as the top two finishers respectively.

The evening commenced with a contest of exceptional quality as Bunting edged past Clayton in a high-calibre affair which saw both men register three-figure averages.

Price subsequently delivered a commanding performance of his own to overcome Gian van Veen, further intensifying the race for third place. The Sheffield crowd were then treated to two dramatic deciding-leg encounters in the remaining quarter-finals. Reigning world champion Littler narrowly overcame Josh Rock, while Humphries survived a tense battle against Michael van Gerwen to progress to the semi-finals.With both Price and Humphries advancing to the last four, the contest for third position remained delicately poised.

However, when Bunting brought an end to Price’s evening in the semi-finals, Humphries knew that victory over Littler would secure a Finals Night clash against Clayton rather than the tournament favourite. The former world champion responded emphatically, dismantling his teenage rival in a resounding 6-1 triumph.

That result set up the final encounter of an arduous sixteen-week league campaign, with Bunting seeking not only a second nightly victory of the season but also the financial reward attached to fifth place in the final standings. After surging into an early 3-0 advantage, the Liverpudlian maintained complete authority throughout proceedings, consistently keeping Humphries at a comfortable distance and refusing to relinquish control of the contest.

To conclude an impressive evening’s work, Bunting even threatened the possibility of a nine-dart finish during the closing stages – a spectacular achievement which would have provided a fitting conclusion to what has been a highly entertaining and dramatic Premier League roadshow across Europe.
